Dale Sr.’s Passing and ‘excessive’ flip
This non-relationship took a turn for the worse, however, following Dale Sr.’s passing, with his will from back in 1992 seeing his entire estate, including DEI, his property, and all of his trademarks to Teresa, according to the Washington Post.
Subsequently, while Dale Jr. and Kelley were in attendance for Dale Sr.’s internment, neither was consulted on the design of his final resting place, one which is heavily guarded by fences and cameras.
What’s more, according to Kelley, neither she nor her brother was given the opportunity to sift through Dale Sr.’s personal possessions, photographs, or any items from their childhoods following his passing.
Since Dale Sr.’s internment, neither Dale Jr. nor Kelley has returned to his mausoleum, with Kelley labeling her stepmother “so extreme,” adding that she believes their visiting could result in them being “arrested.”
DEI Downfall
Dale Jr. continued racing for DEI through 2007, winning 17 races, including six during the 2004 season, a year after he finished a career-best third in the driver standings. With his relationship with Teresa having soured, Dale Jr. jumped ship and headed for Hendrick Motorsports, where he’d spend the remaining 10 seasons of his Cup Series career, winning nine races and enduring six winless seasons.
Meanwhile, DEI merged with Chip Ganassi Racing following the 2008 season, although the team’s former facility turned museum, which has been closed since the COVID-19 Pandemic, remains relatively unchanged from its heyday, with cars, trophies, and various other memorabilia – some of which pertained to Dale Jr.’s time with the team – still sitting gathering dust.
The state of the facility was recently revealed following a private tour of the facility, with pictures swiftly making their method onto social media. Upon recognizing these snaps, Dale Jr. was admittedly upbeat on his podcast, explaining, “I was just glad to know that stuff’s still well taken care of.
“It actually made me feel good that some of my cars are still there, in the front, when you go and you look and you’re looking back there, that they still celebrate all of the history…
“I haven’t talked to anybody on that side in so long. I haven’t talked to Teresa in so long that I don’t know really where they are emotionally about the relationship or the lack of a relationship.
“And so I was happy to see that some of my cars were still in there. Gives me some hope that there’s a chance of reconciliation somewhere down the road. Even though maybe even though it’s unlikely.”

Reconciliation hopes and recent controversy
Dale Jr.’s recent comments regarding Teresa came around a year after he praised her for doing “a really good job protecting dad’s legacy and taking care of that over the years,” on his podcast.
He explained, “I had a you know hot and cold relationship with Teresa over the years but I’ve always said at this table she’s fair, she’s as straight and fair as can be and there’s been some moments where she’s proved to me that she’s done some things that have impressed me or surprised me.”
Whether this cooling of the feud will ever lead to some form of reconciliation is something only time will tell. However, it seems unlikely that she will have much of a relationship with Kerry any time soon, given that he recently joined fellow Mooresville, North Carolina locals in blasting a proposed sale of land by Teresa to be used as a knowledge heart.
The proposal was finally withdrawn by the builders, as per Mooresville mayor Chris Carney.
