Coco Gauff made honest ‘nervous’ admission ahead – Sports News
Coco Gauff is set for a possible showdown with Emma Raducanu at the prestigious WTA 1000 in Indian Wells. If Raducanu secures a victory in her initial match, she’s slated to take on the world No.3, who will start in the second round courtesy of a bye.
The pair has crossed paths once previously, during the 2023 Australian Open, where Gauff triumphed in two sets. Despite what appeared as a comfortable win, the American conceded that she felt “nervous” leading up to the much-anticipated face-off with Raducanu.
Gauff had entered the tournament as the seventh seed and confronted Raducanu in the second round. Sporting an air of uncertainty due to an ankle injury just days before, Raducanu nevertheless managed to secure her first-round match, paving the way for their inaugural clash.
It was a match-up ripe with excitement, pitching two teenage prodigies against each other. Raducanu made a sensational entry into professional tennis by clinching the 2021 U.S. Open title as a mere qualifier shortly after completing her A Levels at age 18.
Gauff meahwile broke onto the scene even earlier, causing a stir in Wimbledon when she was 15.
Both athletes felt the enormity of the moment; however, Gauff emerged victorious, holding off Raducanu’s late surge to clinch the match 6-3, 7-6(4).
Reflecting on the encounter, Gauff acknowledged her apprehension about their first competitive meeting, noting: “In the beginning, I think we both started off rocky but I think the match was good quality for the most part, considering the circumstances.
“Both of us were nervous. This was a long-anticipated matchup since the draw came out, so I’m glad this was a good match for you guys.”
Raducanu also shared admiration for her opponent, stating: “She is a great mover, great athlete. Puts another ball in play, so you feel like you have to squeeze it closer to the line and then she kind of teases errors out of you that way.”
DON’T MISS…
The young tennis sensations are now setting their sights on a potential second clash at Indian Wells. Raducanu will face off against Gauff in round two if she can overcome Moyuka Uchijima in the opening round.
Raducanu’s upcoming tournament holds significance as it marks her return to professional play following an incident involving a man with “fixated behaviour” during her previous match in Dubai.
After recognizing the same individual who had approached her before, Raducanu notified WTA and event officials, leading to his removal from her match. The WTA commented on the incident, stating: “On Monday, February 17, Emma Raducanu was approached in a public area by a man who exhibited fixated behaviour.”
They continued, detailing the ejection and subsequent ban: “This same individual was identified in the first few rows during Emma’s match on Tuesday at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and subsequently ejected. He will be banned from all WTA events pending a threat assessment.”
Eventually, Dubai authorities disclosed that Raducanu had opted not to press charges after the man agreed to an official pledge to keep his distance from her.
