Sir Keir Starmer’s new over-70s driving guidelines could not go far enough, with a prime professional raising critical issues over dementia victims. The Labour Government is at present consulting on main adjustments set to have an effect on motorists over 70, with necessary eyesight checks prone to are available in.

The new rule will guarantee eye checks are obligatory at licence renewal each three years after the age of 70 in a main bid to spice up street security. The information has been welcomed by campaigners, however John Kushnick, Legal Operations Director at National Accident Helpline, warned that the Labour Government may do more.

As properly as imaginative and prescient checks, John is more involved about response occasions and has highlighted dementia as a doubtlessly critical fear.

Speaking solely to Express.co.uk, John defined: “Mandatory eye tests are welcome – glasses can correct vision and tests are free over 60. But eyesight is often the least concern.

“It’s one thing seeing a risk, another reacting in time. Shockingly, while Alzheimer’s is notifiable to the DVLA, dementia broadly isn’t. The onus falls on drivers or families, with GPs often refusing to report even suspected unsafe drivers.”

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, getting diagnosed with dementia is not itself a reason to stop driving. They revealed that at least one in three people suffering from dementia still gets behind the wheel. However, they stressed that over time, dementia will affect the skills needed for safe driving.

However, there are still concerns that motorists suffering from impairments are not coming forward for fear of losing their freedoms.

John added: “We must recognise older people aren’t just drivers, they’re pedestrians too. People over 70 are disproportionately represented in pedestrian fatalities.

“This requires creating safe walking environments, using cognitive testing to plan for the end of driving without isolation, and integrating affordable transport alternatives. Supporting mobility supports safety.”
