Motorists residing in distant areas may very well be probably the most affected by the new rule modifications set to hit each older driver above the age of 70. The Government seems to be set to introduce obligatory eyesight testing guidelines, with street customers above the age of 70 pressured to go for a imaginative and prescient evaluation earlier than being allowed behind the wheel.

Drivers must show their imaginative and prescient is up to scratch earlier than renewing their driving licence photocard on the age of 70, and sure each three years after. Pensioners shedding their licence should depend on public transport to get round, which may very well be a severe problem for these residing in more rural areas.

Cherie Carter, Director at Indigo Car Hire, confused this might turn into a main “concern” for older street customers and result in some issues that will need to be addressed.

She warned drivers in distant areas to depend on their vehicles, which raised issues.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Cherie stated: “Customers living in remote areas will rely on their own car; so I do understand their concerns regarding independence. We support people being able to drive for as long as possible, but it has to be done safely for everyone involved.”

The Government admits that they do recognise that having a driving licence is a “lifeline for many”. They confused that having the ability to leap in a car “provides independence and freedom” for older people.

But the main knowledgeable feels that this leaves an excessive amount of room for risk with some street customers more likely to fill out incorrect data simply to remain on the roads.

Cherie instructed Express.co.uk: “Some over 70s will just tick the box as things stand, suggesting that they are fit to drive because it’s their freedom behind the wheel at stake.”

The DfT said: “Vision is a critical component of safe driving and ensuring that older drivers can meet the minimum standards required for driving directly addresses a key factor in road safety.

“Therefore, this consultation is seeking views on potentially moving away from the current system of self-declaration for eyesight standards for drivers aged 70 and over and introducing mandatory eyesight tests for older drivers as part of the driving licence renewal process.”
