UK drivers who maintain a car or motorbike licence could be issued £1,000 nice, the DVLA warns. But it is not simply people who’ve been driving for years which can be at risk, as learner drivers could additionally discover themselves in scorching water.

According to the gov.uk web site, when you’ve got any circumstances that could have an effect on your driving, it is necessary to inform the DVLA. Neglecting to take action could land you with a hefty £1,000 nice.

Discussing the problem for these with car or motorbike licence, it explains: “You could be fined up to £1,000 if you do not tell DVLA about a condition that might affect your ability to drive safely. You could also be prosecuted if you have an accident.

The rules say that you must inform the DVLA if you hold a driving licence and you develop a ‘notifiable’ medical condition or disability, or a condition or disability has worsened since you received your licence.

Notifiable conditions are anything that could affect your ability to drive safely. They can include:

  • diabetes or taking insulin

  • heart conditions (including atrial fibrillation and pacemakers)
  • sleep apnoea
  • epilepsy

Additionally, a driver could face prosecution if they have an eye condition that affects their ability to drive and fail to declare it.

You must tell DVLA if you have certain eye conditions. The eye conditions you must tell DVLA about are:

  • blepharospasm

  • you have retinitis pigmentosa that affects one or both eyes
  • a GP, optician or eye specialist has said you should not drive
  • you do not meet the visual standards for driving

What are the eyesight requirements for driving?

There are three things you must remember before you get behind the wheel. You should meet the standards if you:

  1. can read a number plate from 20 metres away
  2. have no double vision
  3. have a normal field of vision in at least one eye (your optician can test this)

The GOV.UK warns drivers: “If you’re not sure in case you meet the visible requirements for driving, you must get advice out of your GP, optician or an eye specialist.”

Declare

If you have any issues with your eyes, you should report your condition to the DVLA online as soon as possible. You can do so here.

The motoring agency states: “If you may have a situation in a single eye and one other situation affecting your different eye, you need to fill in and ship type V1 to DVLA. The tackle is on the shape. You may use type V1 in case you can’t use the online service. There are more circumstances you need to report when you’ve got a bus, coach or lorry licence“, it adds

What happens if I disclose a medical condition?

Depending on the nature of your reported condition, you might be required to undergo a test. For example, if you report a condition that impairs your vision, the “DVLA might refer you for an eyesight take a look at with their contracted optician.”

It is confirmed: “If you report a medical situation that impacts your imaginative and prescient, DVLA might refer you for an eyesight take a look at with their contracted optician. You wouldn’t have to pay for the take a look at. DVLA then considers all medical proof offered as half of a driving licence software, together with the end result of the eyesight take a look at.”

Should you decide to get your eyesight test elsewhere, you can “submit the outcomes of an eyesight take a look at achieved by one other optician as long as it consists of an ‘Esterman visible take a look at’.”

The DVLA say it does not “guarantee they are going to settle for an eyesight take a look at achieved by different opticians. You’ll need to pay for the take a look at your self.”

In its final warning, it cautions: “You could be prosecuted in case you drive with out assembly the requirements of imaginative and prescient for driving.”

Book an eye test

The visual standard for driving is being able to read a car number plate made after September 1, 2001, with glasses or contact lenses if necessary, from 20 metres away. If you’re uncertain whether you meet this standard, you can request your optician to book you in for a test.

It’s best to do this asap, particularly if you’re a learner driver. This is because “initially of your sensible driving take a look at, you must appropriately learn a quantity plate on a parked vehicle”, the GOV.UK notes.

It concludes: “If you can not, you’ll fail your driving take a look at and the take a look at won’t proceed. DVLA will be informed, and your licence will be revoked. When you reapply to your driving licence, DVLA will ask you to have an eyesight take a look at with DVSA. This will be at a driving take a look at centre. If you’re profitable, you’ll nonetheless need to cross the DVSA normal eyesight take a look at at your subsequent sensible driving take a look at.”
