Households urged to buy petrol and milk as 17-hour | Tech News

Snow has begun falling in elements of the UK this morning, with areas of Durham and West Yorkshire together with Leeds and Bradford waking up to heavy snowfall inflicting journey disruption.

The Met Office stated: “Outbreaks of rain will fall as snow over higher hills initially, before the snow starts to fall to lower levels through Thursday evening. Any settling snow will mainly be confined to high ground, above 200 metres 2 to 5cm is possible, and above 300 metres, a few locations may see as much as 10cm.

“The rain and snow is anticipated to clear south during the early hours of Friday with temperatures anticipated to fall shortly as skies clear, main to ice on untreated surfaces.” 

Experts at Motors.co.uk urge people to fill up before cold weather, as you need to be fully prepared for travel disruption – there’s nothing worse than running out of fuel in the middle of snowstorm. 

They said: “Always fill up with a full tank of fuel earlier than heading on a long journey. Being caught on the facet of the motorway in zero-degree situations isn’t excellent.”

British Gas, in its advice on preparing for heavy snow, urges drivers to keep their tank half full at least, and to check their car over before making any journey.

According to reports in local newspaper The Press and Journal, shoppers struggled to buy milk or bread in Aberdeenshire on January 6, when heavy snow fell in that part of Scotland, with one local quoted as saying “there was no bread or milk in shops yesterday”, following six days of snowstorms.

British Gas says in its information on making ready for heavy snow: “It’s a good habit to have at least three days’ worth of food and essentials stored in an easy-to-reach part of your home.

“That’s things like medicines, drinking water, non-perishable food and snacks, and extra blankets. You should also keep a torch, batteries and a phone charger close by too.”
