Will Rodgers and Erik Jones have constructed their relationship on the racetrack – now they foster a distinctive bond that is unique to NASCAR and IndyCar.
Rodgers stepped up because the new spotter for Jones’ No. 43 car final season, taking up the first role after serving as a secondary spotter for Legacy Motor Club on highway programs final yr.
“The best job in racing is driving, obviously, but you could argue the second-best job is spotting,” Rodgers shared with Express U.S. Sports forward of final season. “So I felt pretty good about accepting the role”.
Having began his profession in go-karts earlier than transitioning to off-road sports activities automobiles and motocross, Rodgers started racing stock automobiles eight years in the past. The idea of a spotter was an intriguing new component for him.
The role primarily serves as the motive force’s eyes on the back of their head once they’re out on the monitor. NASCAR seats function a ‘halo’ with aspect panels that forestall drivers from turning their heads while in the car.
Consequently, it is difficult to see what’s occurring behind them. Whilst there’s now a digicam feed on the sprint, they depend on a spotter positioned on the roof of the grandstand with a chook’s eye view of the monitor to repeatedly present updates on the encircling exercise.

“For me, coming into stock car racing…I never had a spotter growing up,” Rodgers admits. “When I got here, it was kind of alien for me to hear someone on the radio. But as I evolved, as I had more experience I realized how crucial it was for this type of racing.
“Especially given the tools we’re in and these tight corners. You need any person serving to you perceive what’s occurring behind you and usually what is going on on in the race.
“Not only from a driver perspective but also me then helping the team, as well. The crew chief gets a lot of information from me that can help with things like strategy and setup.
It’s definitely odd for people that aren’t used to it, but once you get immersed into stock car racing it makes a lot of sense. We’re definitely, as a spotter of one of the 36 Cup cars out here, we’re one of the crucial parts of those efforts.”
Taking on the role of spotter himself was by no means half of the plan.
“It’s something that I haven’t actually even pursued at all, ever,” he acknowledges. “I’ve just kind of done it on the side either through coaching or working with different spotters on road courses, specifically, that’s kind of my forte, I guess.

“But after working with Erik a number of occasions (in 2024), I assume I made a mark and a good impression as a result of they determined to make a change with their former spotter and requested me to fill the role. When Erik requested me to do it I did not know what to inform him. I stated, ‘let me give it some thought’, and I did for a few days and I noticed this is able to be a fairly cool alternative.
“One, not a lot of guys get to do it but two, given my experience and the feedback I’ve had being a spotter, I think it makes sense. And it keeps me, really, in racing.”
The connection between drivers and spotters is essential, as racers rely closely on the intel their spotters present. Having full confidence in their spotter’s calls could make or break a race.
“The relationship has to be solid,” Rodgers defined. “Me and Erik have known each other throughout the years, and actually me and Erik have raced together several times and gone head to head on the road course. I think that’s what really developed our relationship.
“Until (2024), he and I did not actually have an excessive amount of away from the monitor. But after I obtained the expertise working with him on the highway programs final yr, that grew.”
Much like every facet of NASCAR, the Cup Series represents the pinnacle. With only 36 full-time drivers competing, that means merely 36 full-time spotters get the call. So what separates the elite from the rest?
“I believe the reference to the motive force, that is primary,” Rodgers says. “You need to be on a good degree with him and have a good understanding.
“Vocabulary, that is important. As long as I’m saying the right things and he understands. Also, coming from racing. That’s an important thing.
“There are a few spotters on the stand who’ve by no means raced earlier than and are superb spotters. But the bulk of of us come from driving the car and perceive what the motive force is going via. I really feel like that is the sting a lot of guys get to be a good spotter.”

Similar to drivers themselves, spotters face vastly different challenges depending on the circuit type. Road courses like the Circuit of the Americas, where Rodgers thrives, bear little resemblance to the 2.5-mile superspeedway hosting this weekend’s Daytona 500. Intermediate venues present yet another distinct challenge, as do compact tracks like Bowman Gray, which staged The Clash, or Martinsville. How do these varying circuits transform a spotter’s responsibilities?
“Super speedways that job is completely on my shoulders, proper?” Rodgers says. “They’re pack racing and if I make a unhealthy call, it is form of on me.
“If you got to a mile-and-a-half, it’s a little bit more relaxed. I feel like my job is a little bit more on the strategy side, but that’s me maybe being a little bit naive getting into it right now. I’m helping with traffic and stuff, but we get stretched out.
“On highway programs, related however as a result of of my highway course background I really feel like I can help Erik all through the weekend or the stage or give ideas on issues to attempt to make it higher. Those are form of the important methods I’ll help out on totally different tracks.”.
