Drivers have reported that pump prices have surged this week as the warfare within the Middle East continues. Howard Cox, Founder of TruthfulFuelUK, stated more than 100 motorists have contacted his marketing campaign saying that they’ve needed to pay more to fill up. He stated on Wednesday: “120+ FairFuelUK supporters have contacted the campaign from all across the UK to report that pump prices have increased in the last 48 hours by an average of 6.7p for petrol and 8.8p for diesel.”

He added: “Most of these forecourts, many believe, are selling fuel at these higher prices even though they bought these stocks before any wholesale rises. It seems opportunistic profiteering is rife once again.”

A conflict in the Middle East has been raging since the United States and Israel struck Iran last week. The chaos has had a knock-on effect on key shipping routes and an immediate spike in the price of oil, which directly affects petrol prices.

He said: “The big worry for me at the moment, because we had a 20 per cent increase in oil prices in the last week, is that we will get something like a 5p to 10p increase at the pumps. I think that could come through by the end of the week.”

Mr Cox launched PumpWatch with then-Conservative Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho in 2024.

The idea was to publish daily wholesale prices movements for petrol and diesel, as well as other vehicle fuels.

These figures would show in pence, the wholesale changes over 24 hours, seven days and seven weeks.

The campaigner said this week: “Where is PumpWatch to stop this opportunistic profiteering?”

A new Government initiative, identified as Fuel Finder, “permits the public to check prices simply by supplying actual‑time information to 3rd‑celebration apps and web sites”.
