A significant change is coming to the way in which all of us keep in contact with family and friends. From January 31, 2027, houses throughout the UK will likely be moved away from conventional copper-based wires (PSTN) and switched to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) as a substitute. This more superior VoIP platform makes use of the web to make cellphone calls. That means customers get higher reception, clearer voice technology and options equivalent to spam call safety and the flexibility to ahead incoming calls to different numbers.

The transition has been coming for some time; it seems hundreds of thousands may not remember or prepared for the sizable replace.

That’s based on a new report from the crew at Phonely, who say 58.7 per cent of UK adults aged over 50 seem blissfully unaware of the upcoming switch-off. That’s regardless of years of industry warnings and a deadline extension to 31 January 2027.

Phonely is now warning that this low awareness might result in a surge in late switching during 2026, doubtlessly inflicting tools shortages, engineer backlogs, delays in rural installations and elevated stress on suppliers.

“With less than a year until the UK’s analogue landline network is permanently switched off, new research suggests millions of over-50s still don’t know it’s happening,” Phonely defined.

For a technology that values stability and reliability, the shift represents a important change. And with the January 2027 deadline approaching, consultants warn that ready could no longer be an option.

Explaining more, Bryn Thompson, Director at Phonely, mentioned: “The extension to 2027 has created a false sense of security. The fact that nearly six in ten over-50s still don’t know this is happening should concern everyone involved. If the majority wait until they’re forced to move, we risk chaos at the eleventh hour.”

And Dan Skipper, Chief Executive Officer of Age UK Norwich, added: “These changes prompt many questions for residents, and a lack of awareness may create unnecessary concern or worry, particularly for older people who are not online and rely on their landline for social connection and safety. Speak to your telephone provider to understand your options for switchover, and to make sure they’re aware if you have a telecare alarm or if you may need additional support.”

What Is Changing and how to modify?

The UK’s copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is being retired and changed with digital Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) companies.

After 31 January 2027, conventional analogue landlines will stop working. Calls will as a substitute run by way of broadband connections.

While youthful households have largely moved to mobiles, many over-50s, notably in rural areas, nonetheless rely closely on their landline for day by day communication, emergency contact and telecare alarms.

In some areas, it stays probably the most dependable type of connection.

Your supplier must be in contact to verify the switch-over and clarify how to do it. It will not value something additional, and the one factor you need is a broadband connection and a trendy landline cellphone. Internet connectivity has raised issues, as some older shoppers nonetheless do not have web entry. An answer for this challenge remains to be being thought-about forward of the 2027 switch-off, but it surely’s value speaking to cellphone suppliers if you are involved.
