“He requested me to talk in the present day, and his one and solely request was to inform mum how a lot he beloved her, how she made his life the happiest life attainable, that he adored her and beloved her each day of his life, to thank her for loving him and spending her life with him, to thank her for his stunning kids, grandchildren and great granddaughter,” he said.
Delany Jr noted that he and his sisters “had been fortunate to have dad and mom who adored one another”.
Delany, renowned for capturing gold in the 1500 meters at the 1956 Summer Olympics, will be celebrated as a pioneer for Irish athletics and an exceptional ambassador for the nation’s sporting heritage. He also secured bronze in the 1500m at the 1958 European Athletics Championships.
The Arklow-born athlete competed at the 1960 Olympic Games but was unable to match his previous achievements, placing sixth in his quarter-final heat. He stepped away from competition in 1962 and subsequently had a short period in coaching.
At his funeral, the couple’s son offered a moving tribute, characterizing his father as a man of “great religion” who identified his athletic abilities from an early age.
