Zionism has develop into a scarlet letter — a catch-all accusation hurled at protests, in school rooms and online to discredit moderately than describe.

There’s no higher time than this week to mirror on why.

During Passover, we have a good time Jews’ liberation from a whole lot of years of enslavement in Egypt, adopted by 40 years wandering within the desert.

That’s when the Jewish tribes adopted a political construction and acquired non secular legal guidelines — appearing as a nation even earlier than they entered the Promised Land, right this moment’s Israel.

It’s been the Jews’ ancestral home ever since, with roots going back more than 3,000 years, sustained by generations of Jewish life and pilgrimages to the Temple, the holiest website for Jews throughout the globe.

Celebrating Passover is an early expression of the Jewish attachment to a homeland that Zionism later formalized.

But in recent times the phrase has been reworkedbastardized into one thing hateful or violent.

Today, the label “Zionist” comes with a price.

And as a civil-rights advocate who works to fight antisemitism and shield the rights of Jewish people, I’ve been repeatedly requested whether or not I want to deny that I’m one.

Until now I’ve declined to say something in response, for a similar motive that some straight people decline to disclaim that they’re homosexual.

Because there’s nothing unsuitable with that, and why make it look like there may be?

But there’s another excuse: It’s as a result of I’m a Zionist.

I’m a Zionist in a minimalist sense.

To some, Zionism is nothing more than the assumption that Israel deserves to exist and defend itself.

It’s not a notably inspiring sense of the time period, but when that’s all it means, then it’s troublesome to see why it’s controversial.

I’m a Zionist in a euphemistic sense.

To paraphrase Martin Luther King Jr., the time period “Zionist” is typically used as a stand-in for “Jew.”

I’m a Jew, proudly, and happy to be known as a Zionist by these to whom the 2 phrases are synonymous.

I’m a Zionist in a pejorative sense.

Increasingly, opponents on the far left deploy Zionism as a blanket condemnation.

If that’s how you employ the time period, depend me in.

I’m a Zionist in a non secular sense.

Drawing from the Mizrachi motion, I view the flourishing of Israel as half of Jewish spirituality.

The return to Zion fulfills a promise, permits fuller efficiency of good deeds tied to the land, and positions the Jewish people to stay out prophetic beliefs of justice and holiness in a sovereign nation.

I’m a Zionist in a cultural sense.

Following the great thinker Ahad Ha’am, I see the Jewish return to the ancestral homeland as important to reviving and sustaining a vibrant, secular Jewish tradition, rooted in Hebrew language, literature, historical past and moral custom.

Without a residing heart in Israel, Jewish id confronted pressures of dilution and assimilation within the diaspora.

I’m a Zionist in a political sense.

In the custom of Theodor Herzl, I imagine Jews, dealing with persistent antisemitism and exclusion, require sovereignty of their historic homeland to secure regular national existence, dignity and self-determination.

Herzl’s imaginative and prescient was a pragmatic response to persecution, a publicly acknowledged home the place Jews might stay as equals, not supplicants.

I’m a Zionist as a result of I’m an American.

According to John Winthrop’s well-known sermon, Americans aspire to be “as a city upon a hill.”

Winthrop known as the new Massachusetts Bay Colony to be a ethical exemplar, a model of charity and justice that might encourage the world — or, if it failed, develop into a cautionary story.

In that sense, each the United States and Israel share an aspiration, nevertheless imperfectly realized, to model a society grounded in ethical function.

So call me a Zionist.

Do in order an insult if you happen to should, or as a euphemism if you happen to need, or as a cultural or non secular statement.

Or call me a Zionist as a result of we’re Americans looking for the best for our nation.

Regardless of your reasoning, I’ll put on the title proudly.

Because what’s being labeled “Zionism” right this moment will not be merely a set of views about Israel; it’s more and more a means of singling out Jews themselves.

We are repeatedly advised that Jews cynically conflate antisemitism and anti-Zionism — whilst synagogues within the United States are attacked, Jewish communities within the United Kingdom are surveilled and intimidated, and Jewish volunteer ambulance companies are firebombed.

The identical voices that insist “it’s not antisemitism, just anti-Zionism” are sometimes those directing hostility at Jews of their own nations over Israel.

This will not be merely a misunderstanding, it’s a contradiction.

Don’t fall for it: Join me.

Next 12 months in Jerusalem.
