NASCAR forced into significant Talladega race – Sports News
Talladega will function new measures meant to stop fuel saving.
Since the introduction of the NextGen Car, one grievance has arisen during superspeedway racing: drivers typically save fuel to offer themselves the best probability of profitable. However, drivers akin to Denny Hamlin and NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. have shared their ideas on the apply, questioning its validity.
The first stage of the April 26 race will finish on Lap 98, with the second stage ending on Lap 143. The race is slated to finish on Lap 188, guaranteeing that fuel conservation is not going to be needed within the last two levels, in line with Motorsport.com’s Matt Weaver.
At superspeedways, drivers are sometimes instructed to run at half-throttle or much less as a result of the NextGen Car struggles to move at Talladega and Daytona. As such, groups are consistently working round this fault to offer themselves the best probability to win.
John Probest, NASCAR’s Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer, defined why a change was obligatory. “If you look at generally how a lot of our speedways were laid out it was a short stage, a short stage and then a long stage to the end,” he stated during the Hauler Talk podcast.
“Going into Talladega, we’re going to flip that and adjust the lengths of the final two stages such that we’re confident that the last two stages are short enough to be made without a fuel stop.
“It could be interesting, as well, in that first stage, the length of it, if there’s some that try to do it on one stop versus some that try to do it on two. We think that if there are some that try to do it on two, they may drag the group that tried to do it on one along with them to where they won’t be able to do it in one, so it’s got the potential there for some pretty interesting strategies.”
What’s more, Earnhardt shared his ideas on the fuel-saving points and proposed sure fixes. “But here’s a couple things that have changed: We took away the point for leading a lap. We also took away the bonus points for leading the most laps. Those are two small, very somewhat insignificant nuggets in the grand scheme of things, but I promise you, if you put anything out in front of these drivers and teams, they will go for it,” he said on his podcast.
“That is one small slice in a large pie that would push the teams back toward pushing harder throughout the event, right? If you knew that if you could get to the front and lead a lap at some point, and you were gonna get a point, you would do it.
“That doesn’t fix the problem entirely. Teams … once they’ve led that lap, they’ll revert right back to saving fuel the rest of the race. Fine. But we found a way to get them to charge for a little bit. That’s progress.”
