Lucas di Grassi has tipped Formula E to “overtake F1” following the attention-catching launch of the all-electric sequence’ new GEN4 car. FE gave the primary on-observe take a look at the GEN4, which will be used from the 2026/27 season, at Circuit Paul Ricard this week.
It showcased the most recent milestone in sustainable motor racing whereas additionally offering a glimpse into FE’s future. Daily Express U.S. Sport was current at Paul Ricard this week, witnessing FE’s GEN4 machine up close because it tore across the iconic 15-nook structure in Le Castellet, Var. The historic venue—as soon as a staple of F1 from 1971 via 2022—offered the right backdrop to reveal the car’s placing tempo.
The GEN4 alerts a substantial efficiency enchancment. In commonplace race situations, it delivers 450 kW, however that determine climbs sharply to 600 kW—round 804 bhp—when ATTACK MODE is deployed or during qualifying runs. That bounce represents a 71% increase in peak output in contrast to the outgoing GEN3 Evo. Acceleration is equally outstanding, with the car succesful of going from 0 to 62 mph in roughly 1.8 seconds and hitting 124 mph in simply 4.4 seconds, earlier than pushing past 208 mph at full tilt. Max Verstappen has additionally acquired a problem from an FE driver.
It additionally breaks new ground technically, changing into the primary FE car—and the primary single-seater—to characteristic everlasting lively all-wheel drive, enhancing each traction and energy supply on observe. While F1 stays the top of motorsport, 18-time Grand Prix starter and FE mainstay Di Grassi says their dominance gained’t be round for much longer.
“It will overtake F1. If it depends on me, by Gen 5 the car will be faster and better than F1,” the Brazilian mentioned to Express U.S. Sport. It was a daring prediction by Di Grassi, however his historical past in FE makes his confidence nicely-based.

Di Grassi drove a “GEN0” car, has pushed GEN1 and GEN2, is at present driving a GEN3, and has pushed a GEN4. He’s a one-time FE world champion with expertise in F1 and Endurance. “We started FE about 14 years ago with the GEN1 car. And the GEN 1 car was really the first prototype car. Nobody had ever built an electric racing car at that moment,” Di Grassi continued.
“So, the car had a lot of compromises; the power was limited to 200 kW, we had two cars, and we had to change cars at the pitstop. And then there was a big step to GEN2 with more power, a single-car, one-battery unit, so it was a big step. Then GEN3 was another big step, 4WD, more power, and so on.
“And now GEN4 is the biggest step ever with 600 kW and way more power.
What gets me excited is that the changes are not marginal. It’s not that the next car is slightly better than the previous one. We are looking at exponential gains, so the changes are getting bigger and bigger.”
He added, “So, I think even the next change, GEN4 to 5, will be even a bigger step. So we are seeing a huge evolution in the technology, the series, and the fanbase. And that gets me very excited because I bet my career in FE 14 years ago, and it paid off to be where I am today.”

Di Grassi’s motorsport journey
The 41-12 months-outdated grew up in São Paulo, Brazil. Di Grassi began on go-karts earlier than heading to Europe to chase his dream of changing into an F1 driver. He went on to compete in F3 and GP2, and finally made it to F1 in 2010.
Di Grassi was introduced as one of two drivers of the then brand-new Virgin Racing. However, Di Grassi struggled throughout the season, ending twenty fourth within the drivers’ championship and scoring no factors. Four years later, he debuted in FE, successful the inaugural race in Beijing, China. In 2016/17, he gained the championship and has been serving to direct FE’s development.
“I had many fulfilling chapters [in my career],” Di Grassi mentioned. “When I started racing go-karts in the suburbs of Sao Paulo in Brazil, in a small city about one hour away. Then my dream was to go to F1 because nothing else existed.
“Then, of course, the dream of every driver is to go to F1. I did all the steps, F3, F2, all the way to F1. Then I drove in endurance in the top cars of all time, which were the LMP1 cars from 10 years ago. Even better than today’s cars by far. And then I helped to create FE. I drove all the generations from GEN0. Actually, there was a Generation 0 car that nobody else drove. Just me, GEN0, GEN1, GEN2, GEN3, GEN4. It far exceeded my expectations as a child when I thought about my career in motorsport.
“When I look back, I would have signed 20% of this if I could when I was back in Brazil. I hope this serves as little as possible as an inspiration for other kids following their dreams. Everybody wants to get to F1, but in the motorsport ecosystem, there is plenty of room in many series, and FE is one of them.”
