Mr Cox then hit out at the government, claiming that “Labour’s feeble attempts to achieve significant economic growth so far will be exposed even further by the high cost of fuel, which is driving up inflation and hitting GDP hard”.
The public and small businesses will “feel the fiscal pain the most”, he added.
“That’s why I call on the Chancellor to cut fuel duty now, remove VAT on the duty, and scrap the 5p rise in the Autumn budget.”
Other countries, such as Spain and Poland, have introduced measures aimed at decreasing prices at the pump.
Since the war started in the Middle East, the extra VAT windfall to the Treasury from soaring pump prices is reportedly just short of £300million, Mr Cox also mentioned.
A Treasury spokesperson previosuly said: “Motorists are paying more because of the war in Iran. This is not our war and that is why we did not join it.
“We are determined to keep costs down for motorists. That’s why we have extended the 5p fuel duty cut twice until September and will continue to monitor the situation.”
