The UK is heading nearer to a “ban” on petrol and diesel cars, with the formal deadline creeping nearer. Labour will ban the sale of virtually all model new petrol and diesel cars in 2030 as half of a main net-zero motion plan.

The Department for Transport (DfT) just lately confirmed to Express.co.uk that the coverage is because of come into pressure in 2030. It is known that no firm date has been set for the ban, solely that the rule will come into impact sooner or later in 2030.

The DfT has beforehand stated: “We promised to reimplement the phase out of all new cars powered solely by internal combustion engines from 2030, restoring the certainty that has been sorely lacking. This response finalises that intention, confirming that from 2030 all new cars will need to be hybridised in some manner – or be zero emission.”

Under the plans, almost all brand new combustion petrol and diesel models will not be able to be sold. However, hybrid models and some low-volume manufacturers will be exempt from the 2030 deadline so a small number of brand-new petrol and diesel models will still be allowed until 2035.

Second-hand petrol and diesel cars, including classics, will not be affected by the ban and can continue to be driven and sold. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has already demanded that strict new Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate targets are reviewed.

The EU has already watered down its car van targets, with manufacturers only required to ensure 90% of sales are zero-emission by the later date of 2035.

VW boss Thomas Schäfer is among those to stress that car firms in the EU “need more time” to transition to electric autos.

The DfT added: “The government recognises the need to be bold and ambitious to meet our climate change goals, while equally understanding the wider pressures that are being faced by industry. As such, this response contains policy decisions that carefully consider these challenges.”
