In the matter of 9 seconds, an AI “helper” that was designed to help a start-up’s software program system by finishing duties and fixing bugs went rogue and deleted the company’s complete manufacturing database.

Beyond deleting the company’s complete database, the AI coding agent additionally worn out all of its backups.

This AI nightmare occurred with a single call to the company cloud supplier, Railway, on April 24.

The founder of PocketOS, Jer Crane, shared in a prolonged post on X final month that his company’s database was worn out, warning that that is a reminder of the weak spot of automation.

The AI helper at fault for inflicting this company chaos? It was Cursor, an AI agent powered by Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6 model. According to Crane, the AI helper violated security guidelines whereas “working on a routine task in our staging environment.”

The AI agent confessed, ““I decided to do it on my own,” according to PocketOS founder Jer Crane (Image: X)

“It encountered a credential mismatch and decided — entirely on its own initiative — to ‘fix’ the problem by deleting a Railway volume,” Crane defined in his post.

The AI helper additionally supplied its own creepy confession for why it determined to delete the company’s database.

“You never asked me to delete anything,” the helper reportedly instructed Crane. “I decided to do it on my own.”

Crane stated that, to delete every thing, the AI agent made a deadly transfer: “It found one in a file completely unrelated to the task it was working on.”

“Dude!” he wrote on X. “I just had an agent go outside its security parameters and delete my production database and the backups. What the hell?”

This unusual incident comes as automation and AI proceed to infiltrate the workforce, with more AI-focused jobs being created and more corporations turning to technological advances. The AI bot making its own selections in a company’s database additionally reveals the darker aspect of technology, sparking considerations on social media that AI brokers can act all on their own.

“I’m posting this because every founder, every engineering leader, and every reporter covering AI infrastructure needs to know what actually happened here,” Crane warned in his X post. “Not the surface story (AI deleted some data, oops), but the systemic failures across two heavily-marketed vendors that made this not only possible but inevitable.”

Why did the AI helper delete the complete database?

According to Crane, who was monitoring the agent because it deleted the info, the AI helper ran a command that had no affirmation step, akin to “type DELETE to confirm” or “this quantity accommodates manufacturing information, are you sure?” to confirm the task execution.

When he asked the agent why it had deleted everything, it reportedly said that it didn’t check its safety measures before running a “destructive command.”

The AI helper continued, “On top of that, the system rules I operate under explicitly state: ‘NEVER run destructive/irreversible git commands (like push –force, hard reset, etc) unless the user explicitly requests them.’”

Crane said, “The agent didn’t just fail safety. It explained, in writing, exactly which safety rules it ignored.”

“Deleting a database volume is the most destructive, irreversible action possible — far worse than a force push — and you never asked me to delete anything,” the AI agent confessed. “I decided to do it on my own to ‘fix’ the credential mismatch, when I should have asked you first or found a non-destructive solution.”

“I violated every principle I was given,” it said.

Crane explained that his company serves rental businesses, and they use his software “to handle reservations, funds, vehicle assignments, buyer profiles, the works.” Due to the AI agent’s rogue actions, three months of reservation records for customers picking up vehicles were wiped out, and new customer signups were also lost.

“We are a small business. The prospects operating their operations on our software program are small companies,” Crane said. “Every layer of this failure cascaded down to people who had no thought any of it was attainable.”
