Gavin Newsom –– pushed by narcissism or delusion or each –– would spend thousands and thousands of tax {dollars} to honor a handful of former residing governors.

The soon-to-be-former gov (wink) has slipped a $20 million provision into his finances plan to create a “Governors’ Legacies Fund,” no matter that’s.

Evidently the thousands and thousands would go unspecified initiatives honoring the 4 (5, when you rely Newsom) former residing governors of California.

This, because the state faces power multibillion-dollar finances deficits; as Newsom shamelessly runs for president in 2028; and as Californians endure a long checklist of crises that Newsom and his latest predecessors created, let fester, and/or exacerbated.

These embody (take a deep breath):

Chronic high charges of homelessness; a staggering lack of affordability; cussed housing, water, vitality and road-capacity shortages; abysmal public schooling outcomes; overtaxation — together with an absurd proposed billionaire tax; woeful underperformance by state authorities; rampant fraud; widespread crime; union and different special-interest seize of Sacramento; and more.

Will all that match on a plaque?

But significantly, California’s a mess –– and Newsom would have the state spend thousands and thousands to laud the residing former governors who introduced us to this level.

Wouldn’t or not it’s simpler, and more sincere, to inscribe a few participation trophies and call it a day?

How many initiatives, precisely, would or ought to honor Gray Davis, who so enraged voters along with his tax, spending and vitality insurance policies that he was recalled from workplace in 2003?

But maybe the actual goal is to tout wannabe prez Newsom –– whereas snubbing the state’s most completed former governor: Ronald Reagan.

Yep: The “living” requirement neatly excludes the US president who helped finish the Cold War, unite Americans (1984 re-election win: 49 states to 1), and restore public religion within the America after the Watergate and Jimmy Carter years.

Newsom’s scheme would as a substitute reward Newsom (presumably), Davis, Pete Wilson, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jerry Brown.

Pointless? Yes.

Except, maybe, to help burnish the present gov’s image in time for 2028 voting, at California taxpayers’ expense.

No, thanks.

Even some of his fellow Dems have referred to as his “legacies” thought absurd.

Newsom’s own legacy is already esteemed at San Francisco City Hall, the place he spent seven years as mayor and has a $100,000 bronze statue in his likeness.

That will simply have to be enough.
