Millions of UK motorists to be hit with 50mph on | Tech News

Drivers have been warned that they are going to face a 50mph pace restrict on a busy UK motorway for the subsequent three years. The change comes as main restore works are set to happen on its motorway bridge. National Highways confirmed it can be investing over £50million on St George’s Bridge, which carries the M5 over a railway line close to Junction 21 for Weston-super-Mare.

As half of the project, the bridge will be lifted 72 instances to substitute bearings beneath the construction. Doing so will enable it to transfer safely underneath site visitors and altering climate circumstances.

National Highways additionally defined that the scheme has been designed to lengthen the life of the bridge and scale back the risk of emergency closures sooner or later.

It has been confirmed that during the repairs, three lanes will stay open in each instructions. However, a contraflow system and 50mph pace restrict will come into play from autumn 2026 to late 2029.

Terry Robinson, engineering lead for National Highways, mentioned: “Many of the motorways and major A-roads we manage were built around 60 years ago and need renewing to ensure they remain fit for purpose for generations to come.

“The St George’s Bridge could be very closely used and is now in need of important work, which is significant to keep drivers protected and the route operating into the longer term.”

The northbound entry slip road will also be widened by the addition of a second merge lane onto the M5 in an effort to reduce congestion around Junction 21.

Mr Robinson said the works are likely to cause travel disruption and advised that extra time should be allowed for journeys, especially during busier periods.

However, once the works are complete, motorists should expect a more reliable route for all traffic.

National Highways said: “The refurbished bridge will last more and scale back the need for upkeep and repairs over the many years to come.

“We’re upgrading the barriers on both sides of the bridge, which will improve safety for road and rail users. We’re [also] widening the slip road by adding a second merge lane onto the M5. This will help to reduce congestion.”
