The UK’s petrol and diesel car ban may put jobs at risk, with recent calls rising for the plan to be ditched. Steve Yemm, Labour MP for Mansfield, has revealed that a quantity of Labour backbenchers have raised considerations across the new guidelines, with fears it may result in job cuts in UK manufacturing.
He confused there are fears that the car industry can’t assist the tempo of change, with the UK’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate guidelines needing to be reviewed. Mr Yemm revealed that constituents who work at a Toyota manufacturing facility had been “all concerned” and referred to as on officers to review the principles “as soon as possible”.
The ZEV Mandate tells manufacturers how much of their production must be made up of electric or zero-emissions vehicles, with a target of 33% by the end of 2026.
Mr Yemm said: “The big concerns I have is that consumer demand is behind where it should be in order to meet the requirements of the mandate by 2030 and by 2035. And we’re going to be ramping up from where we are now through to those years.
“I don’t think the industry can support that and I think that it’s a threat to jobs in the industry. That’s my big concern. These are important well paid jobs and a number of car workers live in my constituency in Mansfield. We all want to meet the goal of net-zero and decarbonisation, but it can’t be at the cost of good jobs.”
SMMT boss Mike Hawes said: “While industry shares the long-term ambition, the pathway to Net Zero must be credible. It cannot come at the cost of lost competitiveness and deindustrialisation. A review of the transition is now urgent to ensure ambition matches market realities and we have a sustainable path to road transport decarbonisation.”
Just days in the past, Kier Mather, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State within the Department for Transport, defined: The Government retains the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate beneath continuous review to make sure it stays efficient.
