Democrats have long pushed pro-union measures sure to spice up costs, whilst they fake to care about “affordability.” But why are Republicans now becoming a member of them?

On Tuesday, a full 20 GOPers crossed the aisle to cross the Faster Labor Contracts Act, 230-193.

The invoice, lifted from Dems’ PRO Act, goals to spice up unionization by forcing employers to comply with labor contracts within 90 days after a newly shaped labor group requires talks.

If the 2 sides don’t attain a deal by then, the invoice empowers the feds to impose a contract on the company and its employees.

That’s absurd: The authorities has no business setting phrases in private-sector contracts of any type.

Decisions by authorities bureaucrats, who’d be far much less aware of the particular points of a contract dispute than the employees and managers themselves, are certain to be based mostly on political biases — not financial realities.

And these realities can squeeze employers, resulting in diminished hours, layoffs and even business closures.

They’re additionally sure to raise costs, as corporations cross the added prices of dear labor contracts on to shoppers.

Meanwhile, different laws — supposedly in response to the 2023 Norfolk Southern derailment in East Palestine, Ohio — slaps pointless new mandates on freight-rail corporations, for no good motive different than to please the unions.

The most outrageous: a requirement for two-man crews, at a time when more and more autos — vehicles, vehicles, boats, planes and, yes, even trains — are operating with no crews in any respect.

In Europe, most trains have long run completely nicely with one-person crews.

Nor would such a requirement have prevented the East Palestine catastrophe: That prepare had three crew members aboard.

Other mandates, like more frequent inspections, are equally unwarranted: Investigators cited an overheated wheel bearing, not something an inspection would have caught, because the trigger of the Norfolk Southern derailment.

Instead of specializing in the “causes of incidents like East Palestine,” warns Ian Jefferies, who heads the Association of American Railroads, these mandates will “only increase costs throughout the freight network and broader supply chain — with no proven safety benefit.”

That’ll harm “rail customers, manufacturers, energy producers, farmers and American consumers.”

President Donald Trump and some Republicans in Congress are backing the amendments nonetheless.

It’s a wealthy irony that Democrats, who gave America Bidenflation and have long backed such price-hiking pro-labor measures, keep insisting they will ship “affordability.”

But when Republicans, who are purported to champion low prices and free markets, back measures like these, it’s not simply ironic; it’s a betrayal.
