Democrat City Council member Phil Wong represents Central Queens. Here, he questions why Mayor Mamdani’s funds contains no new NYPD officers.

New Yorkers don’t decide public safety by City Hall press releases.

They decide it by whether or not somebody solutions when a neighborhood is in bother.

That is why it’s so disappointing that Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s $125.8 billion funds doesn’t add a single NYPD officer.

Across the metropolis, precincts reply 911 calls, examine crimes, patrol streets and deal with quality-of-life issues earlier than they turn out to be greater ones.

They can’t do all of it when stretched skinny.

In April, more than 100 automobiles took over 69th Street and Eliot Avenue in Queens.

Drivers did donuts round a fire between two gasoline stations, blocked the street and broken a marked NYPD vehicle.

This was not some innocent meetup.

It was chaos.

Officers had been handling one other car meetup elsewhere.

That is the actuality when lawlessness erupts in more than one place: understaffed precincts make not possible decisions.

The NYPD has made arrests, however 5 people related to the Eliot Avenue takeover are nonetheless wished.

At Juniper Valley Park, I noticed dozens of e-bikes recklessly circling the monitor.

My workplace known as the precinct and was advised officers would reply.

They by no means did.

About an hour later, a 5-year-old woman was struck by an e-bike.

When we known as again, we had been advised solely two patrol vehicles had been out protecting one of the metropolis’s largest precincts.

Our cops are doing their best.

But they can’t be in all places directly, and households shouldn’t have to attend till somebody is harm earlier than a harmful scenario will get consideration.

This isn’t just a Queens drawback.

Every borough wants fast responses, seen officers and actual enforcement.

Our parks need more Parks Enforcement Patrol officers, too.

Mamdani had room on this funds to make public safety a precedence.

Instead, he walked away from an NYPD headcount increase.

At $125.8 billion, that’s not a lack of assets.

It is a selection.

New Yorkers deserve higher.
