Critics of President Trump insist that his administration has bungled its response to the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela. They blame his dismantling of the US Agency for International Development. But these critics are fallacious.

USAID led America’s humanitarian catastrophe response for years. But after the Biden administration turned company irreparably woke, Trump handed most of these tasks to the State Department. The response was predictably strident. “The evisceration of USAID,” stated one critic, “…will hamper the capacity of international relief agencies.” Another claimed that the nation had “lost the capability to deploy search and rescue.”

As the former head of USAID and the federal lead for international catastrophe response, I oversaw assist for earthquakes, hurricanes, Ebola outbreaks, the Beirut port explosion and big war-related migrations. I do know what competent emergency response appears like. It appears like what the United States is doing in Venezuela.

The important parts for profitable emergency responses stay intact: first responders, referred to as Disaster Assistance Response Teams DARTs, regional help hubs, close by warehousing storing large-scale food and nonfood assist, search-and-rescue instruments, and most significantly, a hand-in-glove relationship with the US Department of Defense that gives our civilian response with navy plane, communications, logistics help and demanding armed security. All are in place and had been easily deployed within hours of the devastating earthquakes.

A sturdy 300-person workforce arrived nearly instantly in Venezuela, together with a dedication of $300 million in assist. That sum is big. It’s according to President Trump’s “full commitment to being supportive of Venezuela.”

As the Department of State tweeted: “The United States’ response … is large, fast, efficient, and ongoing.

Most spectacular is how President Trump is utilizing overseas assist as an efficient software of national security. Whereas the Biden administration used USAID to impose radical social concepts — funding drag reveals in Ecuador and condoms for the Taliban — the Trump method is to be sure that overseas assist is all the time aligned with American pursuits and values.

Consider: Had President Trump not disposed of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro in January, our response to the earthquakes would have been significantly curtailed. Maduro’s deposition allowed America to restore billions of {dollars} in home oil revenues within the leadup to these quakes, easing the nation’s financial disaster.

And now that the nation is free of its anti-American tyrant, our Defense Department is in a position to create a secure international humanitarian assemble  that makes full use of our navy and logistical technology — particularly C-130s and Blackhawk and Chinook helicopters that can swiftly airlift personnel, medication, food and water to determined communities. US navy property would by no means have been permitted to enter the Maduro regime’s borders.

Venezuela’s allies underneath the outdated regime — Communist China, Russia, and Iran — don’t do humanitarian assist. They would have left the Venezuelan people behind.

The potential for even larger catastrophe — starvation, social unrest, illness — has been stemmed. Innumerable lives have been saved, and Venezuela’s neighbors will be free of destabilizing mass migration. In retrospect, President Trump’s removing of Maduro betrays a providential hand.

The administration’s plans for Venezuela’s full transition to democratic self-governance will now have to be expedited. Remnants of Maduro’s corrupt regime nonetheless exist. They’re proving themselves incapable of adequately responding to the duties of rescue and reconstruction. Venezuelans are discovering how many corrupt officers over time took bribes and issued construction permits for buildings that weren’t earthquake resistant.

The White House has ably managed its relationships with each the regime and opposition and is properly positioned to help Venezuelans craft a faster transition plan to maintain free elections, dismantle corrupting and disastrous socialist financial insurance policies, and reintegrate the nation back into our hemispheres fold of democracies.

Far from criticizing President Trump, his critics ought to thank him.
