Chandler Smith etched his identify in the historical past books after coasting to a historic win in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

During Saturday’s FaithFest 250, Smith — who was wrongly advised that he’d received a $50,000 bonus back in April — led a race-high 105 laps en path to beating his Front Row Motorsports teammate Layne Riggs to the end line by 8.479 seconds. The huge hole to second place marked the most important margin of victory ever recorded on a short observe in NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series historical past.

Following his journey to Victory Lane, Smith stated he knew virtually instantly that he had a “really good truck.” Speaking to reporters moments later, the No. 38 Ford driver later make clear the immense impression that the late Kyle Busch had on his profession.

“Right off the get-go from the beginning of the race, I knew we had a actually good truck,” Smith declared. “Just starting to race around guys, and seeing where they were struggling and where my strong suit was.”

Smith has achieved no shortage of success at North Wilkesboro Speedway, having emerged victorious at the historic 0.625-mile short track last May during the Window World 250. Over 102 Truck Series races, he’s won nine times — including twice this season.

Though Smith has grown to love North Wilkesboro Speedway, even he struggled with the track-level conditions on Saturday. Blistering heat created massive headaches for many of the drivers in the field, especially when driving under caution.

“Truthfully, under green flag conditions for me, you’re so focused … on the task at hand, that the heat is secondary,” Smith stated. “You mentally block it out because you can’t focus on the heat. You’ve got to focus on the task at hand. You know, a little slip up is a half a tenth of a tenth, and that’s a big one, especially in this garage.

“So the part that sucks is when you’re under caution, when you don’t have to focus and you’re just riding around. That’s when the heat sucks you start noticing the little things, like the fan ain’t blowing good here at all, the chill-out shirt starting to not be so chill anymore per se. That’s when it really sucks. So green flag run is like, man, it’s great. And then it’s once the caution comes, I was like, ‘Oh, that sucks. I wish we could have just kept going.’”

Elsewhere in his presser, Smith mirrored on what it was like studying below Busch whereas racing for Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) from 2019-2022. “Kyle meant a lot to me, truthfully,” he started. “He meant a lot to me in a sense of, he took the time out of his day when I had questions.

“Not to rush me. He would sit me down and explain what I was asking and giving me the answer. And being very thorough about it. And, you know, not being shortwinded. He cared really deeply about his drivers, and the ones he believed in, you could definitely tell. Because those were the ones that he really wanted to take time with.

“Kyle was an amazing boss, a great mentor and when I look at even the Cup Series garage now, I think of Christopher Bell, Bubba Wallace, William Byron. Kyle was the one that laid the foundation for them and their NASCAR career, and helped those guys get to where they are now. Truthfully, Kyle’s the one who kind of taught us all his tricks up his sleeves. And then funny enough, we’d go out there and beat him with his own tricks, and he’d be like, ‘Man, I need to stop doing this. One of these days, I’ll figure that out.’”
