Gavin Newsom’s tenure as governor could also be drawing to a close, however he’ll go away a long legacy on the bench.

Since taking workplace, Newsom has appointed a whole of 521 judges. An overwhelming majority are Democrats. They will form the future of law and jurisprudence in the Golden State for no less than a technology.

In June 2026 alone, Newsom appointed a whole of 29 judges, largely at the Superior Court (decrease) stage. Of these, 26 are Democrats, whereas the remaining three are No Party Preference or Independent.

Four of the 29 have been Court of Appeals justices. Again, all are Democrats.

At the similar time, Newsom appointed 11 Superior Court judges to serve in numerous counties. All 11 are Democrats.

As of July 1, there are a whole of 64 judicial vacancies in California. Seven of these are at the appellate court docket stage. LA County Superior Court has the most vacancies, with 23 openings

The appointment everyone seems to be most interested by is the California Supreme Court emptiness. The three frontrunners have one factor in common: They have been appointed to the bench by Newsom.

Gonzalo C. Martinez is the presiding justice of the 2nd Court of Appeal, and the former deputy of judicial appointments secretary for Newsom. Jose S. Castillo is affiliate justice of the 4th District Court of Appeal, and was nominated to that post by Newsom. Tracie L. The California Supreme Court is already stacked with Newsom appointees. Newsom appointed Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero and Associate Justice Kelli M. Evans (each Democrats). Both Associate Justice Martin Jenkins and Associate Justice Kelli Evans labored in Newsom’s administration. The sole Republican appointee is Associate Justice Carol Corrigan, who was put on the bench by then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Needless to say, the present California Supreme Court isn’t truthful and balanced, even with a 12-year time period restrict theoretically creating openings for new concepts. Statistically, a Republican choose doesn’t have a probability of being chosen. Both Newsom and his predecessor, Jerry Brown, appointed Supreme Court justices who have been just about assured to uphold the left-wing establishment.

When it involves prison justice, Californians are seeing a correlation between Newsom judicial appointees and light-weight sentences. For instance, Newsom appointee Judge Shannon Faherty gave a very mild sentence to undocumented immigrant Jashanpreet Singh for the vehicular manslaughter of three people, giving him simply 4 years and 18 months in jail.

Judge R. Paul Kawai, a Ventura County Superior Court choose appointed by Newsom, has drawn ire in two high-profile circumstances over tender sentences.

One was the Paul Kessler murder case. Kessler, a Jewish man, died from blunt pressure accidents he acquired at the fingers of pro-Palestine protester Loay Abdel Fattah Alnaji. Judge Kawai handed down a sentence of one 12 months in county jail after the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office had requested for a longer sentence to be served in state jail.

Another Newsom judicial appointee, Judge Crystal T. Seiler, not too long ago handed lenient sentences to 2 males who violently attacked an aged homeless man as he slept in an Arroyo Grande park. The beating was so extreme that the homeless man was left with a everlasting mind harm.

The two males pleaded guilty and no contest to felony elder abuse and great-bodily-injury enhancement. The San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office pushed for the most sentence of seven years in state jail. However, Seiler issued just one 12 months in county jail and formal probation.

Newsom isn’t trying to cover his partisanship in selecting judges. He is utilizing the courts to consolidate the energy of the Democrat Party and its ideology.

As he prepares for a doubtless presidential run in 2028, that document shall be in the highlight. The man who might appoint justices to the US Supreme Court has a document that voters need to grasp.
