To me, and plenty of others, those that make it their mission in life to unfold pleasure, love, consolation and data typically appear invincible, as Dolly Parton did (“Country lost treasure,” Aug. 26).
The information of her passing is a sobering reminder that tomorrow isn’t promised.
Times are attention-grabbing, to say the least.
But if people from all walks of life can agree as we speak that Parton made the world a higher place, then maybe we aren’t as divided as we initially thought.
May her reminiscence be a blessing.

The Smoky Mountains are a little quieter, and the entire world feels a bit much less sparkly.

The Issue: Mayor Mamdani’s plans to spend $70 million to open 5 city-owned supermarkets.
Spending tens of millions on city-run grocery shops is a whole waste (“This Is Bananas! Grocers Sue Zo,” Aug. 25).
First off, the primary location being opened in shouldn’t be a food desert.
Plenty of shops round there will probably be put out of business and workers will lose their jobs.
Second, these shops won’t be paying customary taxes or rent.
They can even be backed by our taxpayer {dollars} to keep costs on the wholesale degree.
Finally, what’s to stop people from shopping for and reselling at a revenue?
