Our high school diploma is worthless – Latest News

New York’s race to the underside in training continued apace Monday, because the Board of Regents scrapped the requirement that the state’s high schoolers truly be taught one thing to graduate.

For 30 years, college students needed to move not less than 4 Regents exams — in math, English, science and Global Studies — to earn a diploma. To be clear, this commonplace was the barest minimal. The governing board stored decreasing the rating needed to move the exams, watering down the outcomes.

But it was one thing: A tangible requirement — a duty — that confirmed we as a state cared about accountability.

And that’s precisely the phrase that the Teachers Union hates. It meant dad and mom and politicians would begin to query why a whopping 15%-20% of college students didn’t meet commencement necessities. Testing highlighted dangerous instructors and dangerous colleges. As regular, COVID is partly in charge right here. The Regents board “temporarily” lifted necessities during the pandemic, and commencement charges rose to 87% in 2022. When the Regents exams returned, the state charge fell to 85%. The metropolis’s: 81%. It was the largest 12 months over 12 months share drop in 20 years.

This embarrassment couldn’t stand. And so, underneath strain from the unions and Democratic officers, gone are the exams. Beginning with the category of 2028, graduates need solely show “critical thinking.” If that sounds obscure, that’s as a result of the Regents Board has set no requirements but. They by no means will. Our colleges, already diploma factories that move college students who don’t even attend class, will give a worthless piece of paper to anybody who asks.

This is why households are fleeing to constitution colleges, to non-public colleges, to home education, to colleges out of state. Because New York public school officers don’t have the braveness to demand achievement. They maintain our youngsters in contempt.

It is the bigotry of low expectations.
