President Donald Trump addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. Naturally, Gavin Newsom confirmed up at UN headquarters the subsequent day to play junior president.

There was one small distinction.

Trump stood at the well-known green-marble podium in the huge General Assembly Hall addressing presidents and prime ministers.

Newsom spoke in a smaller chamber upstairs, on a climate panel with governors and mayors.

Trump was at the grown-ups’ desk. Newsom was at the little children’ desk.

California’s governor held forth on American overseas coverage, congressional elections, the Founding Fathers, world power coverage and America’s ethical standing. He even informed his worldwide viewers that “there’s probably nothing more important” than ending Trump’s presidency “as we know it” by electing a Democratic House in November.

The subject of the occasion, by the way, was climate change.

Newsom proudly introduced that California is “the most un-Trump state in the United States of America.”

Well, apart from 6,081,697 Californians who voted for Trump in 2024. Trump really obtained more votes in California than in 47 different states. Only Texas and Florida gave him more.

But why let 6.1 million Californians interrupt President Newsom’s worldwide debut?

Then got here the California miracle.

Newsom informed the UN that California “runs every day on two-thirds clean energy.” Not precisely. His own administration says 67% of California’s retail electrical energy gross sales come from clean sources.

Those retail gross sales exclude gasoline, diesel and natural gasoline. Apparently, none of that counts as power when Gavin Newsom is explaining California to the world.

Newsom did himself one higher, declaring that 9 out of 10 days this 12 months California “is run on 100% clean energy.”

Not fairly.

The state says clean electrical energy met or exceeded demand for less than half of these days — an average of 6.3 hours a day, not 24. Newsom turned half of a day into an whole day. You know, the sunny half, earlier than everybody will get home and begins utilizing electrical energy.

Apparently solar energy isn’t California’s solely renewable useful resource. So is the English language.

Newsom additionally made the case for the regulatory state, even taking credit for creating Elon Musk: “There is no — forgive us — Elon Musk without California’s regulatory system, that created the certainty where he could make the investments that ultimately became Tesla.”

Musk was already wealthy, due to PayPal. Tesla already existed when he invested in it — and it was going nowhere, regardless of California’s “regulatory system.” Or possibly as a result of of it.

You’re welcome, Elon.

Newsom confuses a regulatory system with the rule of law.

The rule of law creates certainty. Too many rules create uncertainty. The guidelines turn out to be arbitrary and incomprehensible, and unelected bureaucrats act on whims.

California’s regulatory system is a massive motive firms like Tesla depart. Tesla’s headquarters is now in Texas, home of cowboy hats and genuine barbecue.

Then got here the financial miracle.

California, Newsom introduced, has loved 40% GDP growth since 2019, including that “no jurisdiction in America” has grown quicker.

Sure — when you don’t alter for inflation.

That 40% is nominal GDP. So the hovering price of virtually the whole lot Californians buy isn’t merely a cost-of-living disaster anymore. Turns out we’ve been experiencing financial growth.

Congratulations, everybody.

But alter for inflation and California seems to be significantly much less miraculous. The Public Policy Institute of California studies California averaged 3% annual actual GDP growth from 2020 via 2025.

Florida: 5.4%. Texas: 5%.

Perhaps Florida and Texas aren’t jurisdictions anymore.

At one level Newsom went full Kamala Harris: “If you don’t like the way the world looks when you’re standing up, stand on your head and go local.”

I’ve learn that sentence a number of instances. I nonetheless have no thought what the hell he was speaking about.

Newsom additionally congratulated California for lowering man-made greenhouse-gas emissions by double digits.

There is one wildfire-sized asterisk.

California’s official greenhouse-gas stock measures man-made emissions, so wildfire emissions aren’t included. A UCLA-led examine estimated that the catastrophic 2020 fires alone emitted about 127 million metric tons — almost twice what California had cut over the earlier 18 years.

Apparently carbon is an existential risk when it comes out of your SUV. When hundreds of thousands of acres of California are on fire, it doesn’t make the spreadsheet.

California accounts for roughly 0.63% of worldwide greenhouse-gas emissions.

That’s it. Six-tenths of 1%.

Think about that the subsequent time California politicians let you know your garden mower, water heater or car have to be sacrificed to save lots of the planet.

Perhaps that’s why Newsom wants the United Nations. He’s working out of carbon molecules over which he has jurisdiction.

Newsom closed by promising to return with the “fresh air of progress” changing the “stale air” popping out of Washington.

Of course he needs to come back back. At the UN, Newsom will get to lecture the world about California as an alternative of answering to Californians about California.

I’m wondering if there’s an even smaller chamber by which former governors communicate?
