TSA agents issue brutal advice to people who still – Travel News

The Transportation Security Administration is now requiring vacationers to have a federally accepted type of identification to journey through air within the United States.

This is as a result of a 2005 Real ID security law is set to go into impact on May 7, 2025. Now, airport goers should carry identification that complies with the Real ID law or risk being turned away on the gate or face questioning by TSA.

According to TSA, acceptable varieties of identification embrace a driver’s license, state ID or passport.

A TSA officer might require vacationers to full an identification verification course of, which includes sharing their identify and handle to affirm their identification.

Once that course of is accomplished, a traveler can enter the continuing checkpoint, although it might be subject to additional screening.

The TSA warns that if a traveler refuses to cooperate within the identification verification course of or if their identification can’t be confirmed, they won’t be allowed to journey.

Should passengers lack one of the acknowledged IDs from May 7 onward, they need to brace for potential holdups at TSA checks, warn authorities. The extent of any delays will probably be decided on the amount of vacationers equally unprepared.

TSA Federal Security Director Kc Wurtsbaugh emphasised the urgency, stating: “With the upcoming federal enforcement of REAL ID exactly four weeks away, I can’t stress enough the importance of travelers being prepared.

“Take a jiffy now to decide what type of picture identification you’ll use to confirm your identification the subsequent time you journey by air.”

Wurtsbaugh urged: “If you need to apply for a REAL ID from the state of Montana, make plans to achieve this now. Even if you do not have plans to journey by air now, your plans might change. Now is the time to make a plan.”

However, people are still struggling with getting a Real ID and having travel issues because of it.

One person took to Reddit to explain their situation and to ask for advice on a board called: “no actual id, please give advice!”

The particular person wrote: “I used to be questioning for those who guys might give me some advice about my scenario. I flew to Seattle from LAX on April 17, and my flight back to LAX is for May 27. I used my drivers license (not actual id compliant) as my id. I do know that realid is common information after studying the opposite posts however I genuinely hadn’t heard of this till final week.

“I have a picture of my SSN, student id card (with access to the portal and emails), my upcoming internship’s portal and emails (no physical badge yet but I did complete a background check for them if that helps), a credit card, and my drivers license ofc.

“I did not carry another kind of ID similar to my start certificates or passport with me, they’re all in LA. Booking a spherical journey back home to get my passport is de facto costly and inconvenient, so I used to be questioning if I might get by with out a actual id on May 27 because it’s a little bit after May 7.

“I thought there would be some leniency since they let me fly to Seattle without warning me about the real id but I’m not so sure.”

Many took to the feedback part with brutal advice, with the highest commenter writing: “There will be no leniency, you will be screened accordingly, give yourself a few hours extra. You will fly, but nobody knows what and how long it’s gonna take. So get there early.”

A second added: “‘Thought there’d be some leniency’ ?! It’s been delayed so many times. Leniency is over.”

A 3rd stated: “Hahahahahahahaha you’ve had 20 years,” as a fourth agreed: “Exactly! I still can’t square that 20 years with someone actually saying ‘I genuinely hadn’t heard of this until last week.’ Almost like ‘ wait, you mean there are really seatbelts on this flight?!?'”

A fifth stated: “You will most likely fly. Secondary inspection is not guaranteed. IMO, this could go either way as a whole. TSA is lenient and secondary are fast and simple(sort of a soft opening). Or they are fed up with all the job cuts in the government and do everything to the letter of the law so that secondary inspections take a very long time (and some get denied).”

Another tried to help with saying: “I can you have someone send your passport to you? Passports are Real ID compliant.”

However, a seemingly actual TSA agent wrote: “We got guidance on the required additional screening today for people without real IDs and it isn’t going to hold you up as much as everyone thought.

“It’s simply an extra search process. We apparently aren’t going to be doing identification verification for people with out actual ID compliant identification.

“We did a dry run today, and it was pretty minimal impact the way we had it set up. Non real ID compliant people had their own lane with some of them receiving additional screening, but most of them not receiving anything additional.

“That lane positively moved the slowest, however not having to do the identification verification everybody thought we have been going to have to do makes it not take that a lot extra time.”
