Frances Tiafoe experienced an embarrassing moment when he arrived for his second-round match at Indian Wells on Friday, only to realize he had forgotten the most crucial item – his rackets.

The world No. 17 had to inform his opponent Damir Dzumhur of the situation, leading to a delay as they awaited an urgent delivery from Tiafoe’s coach. Despite the hiccup, the American managed to win the match in straight sets, even after being down 1-5 in the second set.

Tiafoe, the 16th seed who received a bye directly to the second round, was all set for his opening match against Dzumhur. The 27-year-old appeared ready and eager, waving to the crowd as he entered Court 2.

However, the excitement quickly turned into panic when Tiafoe realized he had left his rackets behind while searching through his bag. After informing the umpire of his predicament, Tiafoe turned to his team for help.

Cameras captured his coach, David Witt, rushing off to retrieve the missing rackets. Tiafoe then explained the unusual delay to Dzumhur, admitting that he had left his equipment behind.

Finally, Witt returned with a stack of rackets, which the umpire handed over to Tiafoe, allowing the match to commence. The crowd erupted in cheers as Tiafoe was finally reunited with his rackets.

Tiafoe battled back from behind twice in the opening set to snatch it in a tiebreak. The determined Bosnian qualifier, Dzumhur, wasn’t ready to fold and almost swung the momentum when he zoomed into a 5-1 lead.

On the cusp of dropping the second set, Tiafoe revved up his game, winning five straight games and nearly closing out the match on his serve. However, Dzumhur retaliated and pushed the set to another tiebreak where he surged forward with a 6-3 lead.

But once again, Tiafoe refused to buckle, saving four set points to triumph with scores of 7-6(4), 7-6(7). After fighting back in the second set, Tiafoe reflected: “I was serving so poorly today, so I had to play so many long points and it was kind of what he wanted and I couldn’t hit through him.

“Should’ve come forward maybe a little more but it was tough. He was defending so well today and I couldn’t hit as big as I would like. At 5-1, it’s so funny, you kind of care less. I started swinging the ball amazing and all of a sudden started hitting huge, threw a lot of points together really fast.”

Reflecting on his performance in the tiebreak, Tiafoe said: “In the breaker, get a little lucky. He was doing the right things. Just played two good points and he goes for a shot he probably shouldn’t have, was a little tight.”

“Just got to dig deep there but at that point I’m like, ‘I just really want to get it done in straights’. And I’m happy I did. I’m happy it was ugly, to be honest with you, I need tough, gruelling wins. This gives me a ton of confidence.”

Tiafoe is now set to compete against another qualifier, Yosuke Watanuki, in the third round. He will undoubtedly aim to be better prepared and ensure he has his rackets ready for their upcoming match.
