Dale Earnhardt Jr. brings up dad in bold Carson – Sports News
Dale Earnhardt Jr. rushed to the protection of Carson Hocevar whereas likening the 22-year-old’s controversial driving techniques to the fashion of his late father, Dale Earnhardt Sr.
Constantly in the crosshairs for his assertive driving, Hocevar has ruffled feathers throughout NASCAR. Ryan Blaney labeled him as a “moron” on the heels of the Ambetter Health 400, AJ Allmendinger delivered a no-nonsense warning on the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix and Ryan Preece ominously declared “he’ll have his day” after a Wurth 400 wreck.
The rigidity escalated during final week’s Cracker Barrel 400 when Hocevar tagged Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in the left rear on Lap 106 — sending the No. 47 Chevrolet spinning into the wall. After the latter warned that he would precise revenge for the incident, the previous issued a public apology.
Yet Earnhardt believes that Hocevar has little to apologize for. On the most recent episode of the ‘Dale Jr. Download’ podcast, the 50-year-old revealed he was reminded of his father whereas watching the Spire Motorsports driver’s ruthless on-track mentality.
“Carson, I even stated in a clip on Dirty Mo Media, I believe the man jogs my memory of a 1979 Dale Earnhardt,” he started. “Fast, not scared to use his front bumper, don’t care if somebody gets mad about it and on the verge of becoming a star. That’s exactly how I saw dad around that timeframe in his career.
“Off the track, what they like to do Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, they could be completely different people. But on the racetrack, that’s what I see out of Carson. And I say that to maybe encourage Carson to continue what he’s doing because Dale Earnhardt ended up becoming a seven-time champion. That aggressive style was something that endeared him to a lot of people. You can see a lot of people enjoy that as well, out of Carson.”
Earnhardt’s comments are a stark contrast to his initial opinion of Hocevar’s antics at Nashville Superspeedway. While appearing on the Prime Video broadcast of the Cup Series race, he warned: “[Hocevar] might see Stenhouse after this one is over with.
DON’T MISS:
“The tough part about this, man … Hocevar drives up down in the corner and there was a moment where Hocevar definitely had an opportunity to not do that.
“That’s the kind of things that his competitors want him to clean up. Hocevar thinks, in his mind, ‘It’s short track racing. That’s my spot. I’m gonna go down there and move you out of the way.’ But his competitors don’t see it that way.”
Speaking on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Hocevar insisted that he didn’t wish to crash Stenhouse out of the Cup Series race. “I did not wish to wreck him. I went in and I assumed I might get there and get a little more space,” he stated.
“For his arc, I thought he was gonna go run the middle with the 54 [Ty Gibbs] running the bottom and thought I could get in a little deeper and have his spotter call inside and he just came all the way down and I landed into his left rear. Backed him into the fence. I don’t wanna do that and I feel bad for it, obviously, for wrecking somebody’s race car.”
