Dale Earnhardt Jr. addresses Richard Petty’s – Sports News
Dale Earnhardt Jr. shared his ideas concerning Richard Petty’s criticism of NASCAR’s inclusion of street programs all through the season.
After motorsports star Shane Van Gisbergen dominated the Viva Mexico 205, NASCAR’s inaugural factors race in Mexico City, Petty downplayed street programs and the game’s present playoff system. Despite the legend’s critique, NASCAR inched nearer to introducing one other road course, this time positioned in San Diego.
With Petty’s feedback making the rounds, Earnhardt made his ideas recognized on the matter. On a latest episode of the ‘Dale Jr. Download,‘ the 50-year-old defined that he agreed with Petty however shared why it’s important to have numerous programs within the sport.
“I agree with Richard. Road course racing isn’t NASCAR…..There’s been road course racing in NASCAR since the ’50s,” he started, [h/t The Tribune]. “Being a road course racer wasn’t important. If you wanted to get to NASCAR, you raced a short track somewhere locally.
“You ran stock vehicles, you ran late model stock, you ran the Busch Series or the Sportsman vehicles back within the ’80s. You raced full-bodied vehicles round ovals. That was the route.”
He added that while Petty is not wrong with his thinking regarding road courses, the legend’s way of thinking was antiquated. “That was yesterday’s NASCAR, and that is what Richard Petty is speaking about. But we’re in a totally different time. Today’s NASCAR is all-encompassing. It is street programs, short tracks, superspeedway,” he added.
In the end, Earnhardt reiterated his agreement with Petty while also noting that NASCAR drivers need to excel in a variety of tracks, not just ones they are familiar with. “I agree with Richard Petty. NASCAR stock car racing is predominantly an oval-based sequence,” he continued.
“Always has been. We have eliminated some ovals, we have eliminated some tracks, added some street programs. I’m wonderful with that as a result of I do like the concept our drivers need to be great in any respect issues. If you are going to be a champion, you now need to be nearly as good at a street course as you might be at an oval.
“Back when I started driving, you didn’t. You could f—— suck at the road course as long as you were good everywhere else.”

“The way they got this thing fixed, if you win and you’re in, that can’t be right,” Petty started. “From the standpoint that you got somebody, like I say, that’s 30th in the points that’s going to make the playoffs, hey man, what happened to the guy that’s 15th or 16th or 18th?
“You know, been working good, completed good in all places. You’re making a championship state of affairs by profitable a street course, which isn’t actually a NASCAR to start with. So from that standpoint, I believe they are going to need to jockey round and change some of this sort of stuff.”
