Qinwen Zheng, the Chinese tennis star whose perspective Emma Navarro took umbrage with, has formally pulled out of the U.S. Open.

Both Zheng and Navarro competed at Wimbledon, although the previous was defeated within the first spherical by Katerina Siniakova, whereas the latter made it to the Round of 16, falling to rising star Mirra Andreeva. During the event, the Chinese star was noticed with a compression sleeve on her proper elbow, as she handled ache in her proper arm.

Now, the 22-year-old will formally miss the US Open as she recovers from elbow surgical procedure. In a latest social media post, Zheng shared that she had undergone surgical procedure in hopes of addressing the problems she has been coping with.

“I want to share a quick update with you all,” her post on Instagram, which exhibits her in a hospital mattress, started. “Over the past months, I’ve been dealing with persistent pain in my right elbow during training and matches. Despite trying various treatments to manage it, the discomfort never fully went away.

“After consulting with elbow specialists and discussing totally with my group, we determined that arthroscopic surgical procedure was the best option to totally resolve the problem. Yesterday, I underwent the process efficiently, and I’m grateful to have it behind me.

“Now begins the recovery journey. Over the next few weeks and months, I’ll be focusing entirely on rehab—doing everything I can to come back stronger and healthier.

“This is simply a short break, and I see it as a vital step towards a higher model of myself on court docket. Thank you all on your continued help and encouragement. I can’t wait to be back—see you quickly!”

Of note, Zheng had been spotted wearing a sleeve on her right arm since the Australian Open in January. In that tournament, the Chinese star fell to Laura Siegemund in the second round, though it was Zheng’s attitude that garnered attention, specifically Navarro’s.

The 22-year-old often plays with a seriousness, choosing not to be friendly with her opponents, regardless of the result. In Zheng’s eyes, if she were happy for an opponent who just defeated her, it would signal a drastic change in mentality.

This rubbed Navarro the wrong way, with the American star stating: “I informed her I did not respect her as a competitor. I feel she goes about issues in a fairly cut-throat manner.

“It makes for a locker room that doesn’t have a lot of camaraderie, so it’s tough to face an opponent like that, who I really don’t respect. The last few times I’ve played her, because we have been playing each other since we were juniors, I felt just a little bit disrespected by her.”

Zheng tried to clarify her mindset, telling reporters that she is going to at all times shake her opponent’s hand as a result of it’s “basic respect.” “But not always I give a handshake with a smiley face. This, I know myself,” she mentioned on the time.

“And usually, I don’t often give a hug to my opponent as well because I feel that is not necessary for me. Because I come here just to play a match. And if I lost, I will give you just a basic respect and that’s it.

“That’s why you’ll not see me lose one match and with a joyful face to my opponent. If you noticed that on me, that may be very unusual, which suggests I do not care about that match in that day.”
