After the race, Larson was noticed going up to Wallace to congratulate him on a job properly performed, particularly because the 23XI star shut down his detractors. That stated, the Hendrick Motorsports star defined what he skilled all through the race and coming in second place behind Wallace.

“I was praying that he’d run out of fuel, but I also didn’t want to run out of fuel myself, either,” he continued. “So, it is what it is. I’ll take it. You know, I won with some good fortune last year … so to finish second today, it’s OK.” 

Larson commented that he believed he had a “solid day” and did all he might, particularly with how troublesome Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) may very well be for some to move and overtake.

“I was second gear on the first restart, and honestly, that one worked out a little bit better, but he almost got clear of me down the front stretch,” he added.

“And then on the second restart, he brought the pace down a little bit slower, so I needed to be first gear. It was kind of the same thing with me last year – he had the preferred lane on the inside and it’s really hard to beat that.”

For Wallace, his win at IMS culminated years of constantly being close enough to taste victory but left with the aftertaste of defeat. And while those on the outside looking in believed Wallace did not have a chance of winning based on the results of the last 100 races, the star knew change was on the horizon.

During an appearance on ‘The Day After’ podcast, Wallace shared that he knew Sunday was different because of how he felt waking up in the morning before the biggest win of his career. “It was a very surreal outer body experience just from, just from kind of waking up,” he started.

“There was something about yesterday that I haven’t had a feeling like that before. I thought it was…I questioned like, ‘Oh, is this, is this the Kansas feeling? Is this the Martinsville truck win feeling? Like, you know, is this the Talladega feeling?’ And I’m like, ‘Man, this is different.’ I walked to the driver’s meeting, just in this mindset, like no one’s taking this day for me.”
