Having uprooted his life down below in favor of a recent begin and a new problem in the U.S. with NASCAR, New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen is feeling the love from his followers back home, though homesickness is proving an unlucky inevitability.

The 36-year-old driver of the No. 88 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet has confirmed a revelation on street programs in the Cup Series, successful 4 of the 5 this season, together with a additional victory in the Xfinity Series, making him the winningest rookie in Cup historical past.

Rewarded with a multi-year extension from Trackhouse, it seems that van Gisbergen and his spouse, Corvette Racing’s world program supervisor Jessica Dane, are set to stay in North Carolina for some time to come back. He and Jessica just lately tied the knot in a “low-key” affair on the native jail, regardless of their initial plans to not get married.

“Obviously, in this part of the country, it’s pretty NASCAR central,” van Gisbergen informed Sport Nation NZ when requested about life in America and the extent of consideration he receives on a day by day foundation. “Where I live is in a town called Mooresville, race city, so everyone knows someone involved in NASCAR or is part of it, but around the rest of America, you’re pretty good.

“Everyone’s pretty nice. I enjoy it here. It’s full-on racing every single weekend. We’re traveling somewhere. Obviously homesick, racing every week. I just don’t have the time to go home. I used to try and get home every second week when I was living in Australia, but I just can’t do that here.”

When van Gisbergen is ready to head back to Mooresville between races, he’s greeted by a plethora of four-legged associates at his and Jessica’s rural property. “There are about 14 horses, and then we’ve got two dogs, there are five cats, ten chickens, three goats,” he defined on the Stacking Pennies podcast. “We rescued one last year. His name is Steve, a little Aussie red heeler; he’s a menace – he’s pretty cool.

Unsurprisingly, the three-time Supercars Champion also made sure to set aside a parcel of land for racing during his downtime. “We kind of removed the fences and made that track and got a bunch of cars,” he mentioned.

“We’ve got a little [Chevrolet] S10, which BJ McLeod brought around. That’s pretty cool. And we race every couple of weeks…There’s a couple of little Hondas, and there’s a Chrysler.”

And whereas Van Gibsergen added that he has but to flip any vehicles on his yard observe, somebody did drive into a tree.

“I made a track through the woods, and then the first day, someone went head-on into a tree…so we’ve stopped racing through the woods,” he famous. “We need more cars, if anyone’s got some donor cars, that would be good.”

Clearly making probably the most of his alternative in the U.S., van Gisbergen’s homesickness may have been considerably abated, following the arrival of his dad, Robert, who watched on at Watkins Glen as he claimed his fourth Cup win of the season.

“He’s been a massive part of my life and racing career obviously,” van Gisbergen informed Sport Nation NZ of his dad. “When I raced in V8s, he would come to quite a few, three-quarters of the races he’d fly over to and be at.

“So yeah, it’s been tough the last couple of years for him personally, and then it’s just so far to come here. He’s been a bit sick this year, so hasn’t been allowed to fly, and he finally got clearance and the first race he’d come to on the weekend, we got a win.

“So awesome to have him there. He’s here for the next three weeks hanging out, and it’s really cool to have him there. He’s obviously one of my best mates, or is my best mate, and just so fun to have him at the races again.”

And it isn’t simply van Gisbergen’s dad who has been cheering him on of late, noting how he’s been ‘humbled’ by the quantity of followers from New Zealand and Australia following his U.S. journey.

“It’s been amazing the coverage I get every week and how much people follow me even when it’s a bad week, the support,” he mentioned. “But yeah, really thankful to everyone and appreciate the support, and at a lot of tracks this year I see Kiwi flags in the stands and stuff, which is just so cool. Yeah, really appreciate it and just, it’s hard to put it into words, but it’s really cool to see how many people have followed it.”
