Oil and fuel producer ConocoPhillips will cut 20%-25% of its workforce as half of a broad restructuring, a company spokesperson stated on Wednesday, after 5 sources informed Reuters that CEO Ryan Lance detailed the plans in a morning video message.

Shares of the third largest US oil producer declined 4.4% to $94.68,

“I know these changes create uncertainty, and they are unsettling,” Lance stated.

A fall in oil costs has put ConocoPhillips and its rivals below strain this yr, forcing them to cut workers, curb capital spending and cut back drilling. Fellow US oil main Chevron introduced it would lay off up to 20% of its workers in February, and oil service giant SLB can also be slicing its workforce.

In January, UK oil giant BP stated it would cut over 7,000 workers, or 5% of its workforce.

“As we streamline our organization and take work out of the system, we will need fewer roles,” Lance stated within the video heard by Reuters.

Costs have risen by about $2 per barrel, making it more durable for the company to compete, Lance stated. He stated controllable prices had risen to $13 per barrel in 2024 from $11 in 2021.

US crude futures have decreased by about 11% to this point this yr.

Last month, ConocoPhillips recognized more than $1 billion of price discount and margin enhancement alternatives, on prime of the more than $1 billion in price financial savings from its acquisition of Marathon Oil final yr.

The company has about 13,000 workers globally, which means between 2,600 and three,250 workers will probably be affected. Most of the cuts will probably be made earlier than the top of the yr, ConocoPhillips spokesperson Dennis Nuss stated in an emailed response to Reuters.

The new construction and management will probably be made public in mid-September, and the reorganization will probably be accomplished by 2026, two of the sources stated.

The company is set to maintain a city corridor assembly on Thursday morning, the sources stated.

In April, two sources informed Reuters that Houston-based ConocoPhillips had employed management consulting firm Boston Consulting Group to advise on the restructuring and layoff program, referred to internally as “Competitive Edge.”

ConocoPhillips’ internet income shrank within the second quarter to about $2 billion, the bottom for the reason that quarter ended March 2021, when COVID-19 had ravaged demand.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the company’s shares have fallen 4% to this point this yr, in contrast with a 5% rise in S&P 500 Energy Index.
