Rivian is recalling 24,214 US electric vehicles over a software program glitch in its hands-free driver help program that may fail to determine lead vehicles and increase the risk of a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated Friday.

It estimates 100% of these electric SUVs and vans have the defect.

Rivian stated it’s conscious of at the least one low-speed crash in May after Rivian’s Hands-Free Highway Assist characteristic didn’t accurately determine a lead vehicle in stop-and-go visitors.

It shouldn’t be conscious of any accidents associated to the defective software program model.

Notification letters are anticipated to be mailed to house owners by Nov. 4, based on the NHTSA.

Rivian has launched an over-the-air software program replace to treatment the difficulty, free of charge.

Rivian’s Hands-Free characteristic can steer, brake and speed up the vehicle in sure restricted situations, particularly designed to be used on controlled-access highways.

Rivian emphasised that even when the autonomous characteristic is engaged, the driver continues to be the operator of the vehicle and is liable for remaining attentive to the car’s motion.

“Rivian has clearly marketed its HWA feature as not replacing the driver’s attention, judgement and need to control the vehicle,” the automaker stated in its recall report to the NHTSA.

Automakers have been ramping up their efforts to release aggressive driver-assistance options, like lane-keep help and adaptive cruise control, in addition to autonomous driving performance.
