McLaren chief Zak Brown has weighed in on the buzzing hypothesis about ex-rival Christian Horner’s potential return to Formula 1.

Horner, 51, was let go from his place as Red Bull’s workforce principal after a two-decade tenure in July, with his departure formally confirmed final month. Despite being below contract till 2030, the British govt negotiated a staggering £80 million ($108 million) severance bundle.

The settlement between Horner and Red Bull additionally permits him to make a comeback to F1 earlier than subsequent summer season. This clause has ignited rumors that Horner may already be planning his subsequent transfer, with Alpine, Aston Martin, and Haas all reportedly curious about his experience.

A return to the racing circuit would reignite his rivalry with Brown, who emerged as his principal adversary during Red Bull’s conflict with McLaren in recent times.

Brown, who serves because the CEO of McLaren’s F1 workforce, admits that he and Horner weren’t precisely “best friends” – however he acknowledges that the 51-year-old introduced a sense of “authenticity” to the game, making it more “genuine.”

“I think he’s had a stellar career in Formula 1; his results are lots of drivers’ championships, world championships,” Brown informed Bloomberg.

“I think when you get into sport, not everyone’s best friends, there’s different characters, so, while we may not have too many cups of tea in England, as we say, you need all different types of characters in the sport.

“I feel that is what makes the game very thrilling, that is that sort of the Netflix impact, is what occurs off the monitor. I feel our sport’s distinctive in that not solely is the competitors on the sector of play extraordinarily thrilling, there’s a lot of competitors off the sector of play.

“And it’s a small group of team bosses and drivers, so I think the fans can get to know us all. I’ve got my friends in pitlane and some that aren’t, but I think that’s what makes it exciting, and it’s authentic and genuine.”

However, Brown beforehand advised that Horner’s departure had created a “healthier place” in F1, with Laurent Mekies now serving as Red Bull’s workforce principal. “If I look up and down pit lane now, I see us fighting each other hard politically, but the line is not being crossed, and that line got crossed before,” he revealed.

“So I think that we’ll see a little bit of a change for the better. There’s a higher level of trust that now if we sit down and have a conversation on a topic where we think there could be some confidentiality, and it’s just not an automatic, ‘I’m going to use that as a political weapon.’

“We’re going to be in a higher place, a little bit more unified, and a little bit more trusting that whereas we’re combating on monitor, we are able to have a dialog about what’s good for the game off it. And that will not get manipulated for political causes and brought out of context.”
