Older drivers are “at risk” of developing a dangerous condition which may put them at risk behind the wheel. Experts on the Older Drivers Forum mentioned motorists in later life are prone to discover a discount in their eyesight with some at risk of developing “tunnel vision”.

This is when street customers lose their “peripheral vision”, which is a main street security concern. Motorists who can not see something out of their direct line of sight could also be unable to determine important street hazards. This may put drivers in hazard of hitting people, different autos or particles in the street.

The Older Drivers Forum mentioned: “Sometimes as we get older our field of vision will reduce and in severe cases can become tunnel vision.

“This can make driving dangerous as we lose our peripheral vision and therefore won’t see a hazard appearing from the side until it is often too late.

“As a driver, we should all ask for a ‘Field of Vision’ check when we have an eyesight test as this is not always done as standard.”

Eyesight checks will not be necessary in the UK to resume a driving licence at 70 years previous which means people don’t must legally have their imaginative and prescient checked to stay on the street.

However, the DVLA states street customers should declare any medical circumstances which have an effect on driving together with poor eyesight.

The guidelines state people should have a visible acuity of no less than decimal 0.5 (6/12) measured on the Snellen scale.

The DVLA states this may be achieved with both glasses or contact lenses.

But, with eyesight deteriorating regularly over somebody’s life, it may be troublesome for motorists to know when their imaginative and prescient is taken into account dangerous.

Campaigners have repeatedly recommended older street customers ought to bear eyesight testing at 70 however no formal proposals have but been put ahead.

Rob Heard, Founder of the Older Drivers Forum beforehand recommended an eye check forward of a driving licence renewal was a good suggestion.

He mentioned: “Certainly when we get to the age of 70, rather than just ticking the box that we’re fit and healthy to drive, thinking about it and maybe going out and getting an assessment.

“At the age of 70, I think we should be looking at having one with every renewal.”
