NASCAR boss responds to ‘unlucky’ 23XI hearing – Sports News
NASCAR’s fame has taken a dent in latest months after brutal messages from prime officers had been revealed as a half of 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports’ ongoing antitrust lawsuit towards the group’s constitution settlement and what it deems to be “monopolistic” practices.
The messages in query got here to mild in August during a hearing in Charlotte, and painted a less-than-complimentary image of commissioner Steve Phelps and president Steve O’Donnell.
One specific electronic mail from a pissed off Phelps during constitution talks mentioned a proposed settlement early in negotiations represented “zero wins for the teams,” whereas he later mentioned the settlement “must reflect a middle position or we are dead in the water – they will sign them but we are (expletive) moving forward,” as per ESPN.
As for O’Donnell, he too snubbed his nostril on the early settlement, believing it set the game back 30 years, commenting, “F— the teams, dictatorship, motorsport, redneck, southern, tiny sport.”
Such language wasn’t one-sided, although, with 23XI co-owner Michael Jordan having known as Joe Gibbs Racing “——-” by way of textual content after they opted to signal the constitution settlement. As for JGR driver and fellow 23XI co-owner, Denny Hamlin, he claimed in one other message that his “disdain for the France family (NASCAR’s owners) runs deep…(but) please let’s not sabotage our own business.”
Most just lately, the 2 sides failed to attain a settlement settlement, that means the lawsuit will go to courtroom in December. What’s more, NASCAR’s countersuit was dismissed by Judge Kenneth Bell.
Fast ahead to Friday at Phoenix Raceway, and with the Cup, Xfinity, and Craftsman Truck Series all set to crown their champions over the approaching days, Phelps and O’Donnell had been requested by Bob Pockrass how they intend to “build confidence with fans and sponsors and potential team investors in a sport that has been portrayed as having a questionable economic model (following the charter agreement release) and with so much internal and private thoughts recently exposed from both the NASCAR and team officials?”
“It’s certainly not something that we were interested in having happen, but it’s happened. I would say that the comments that Steve and I made up front were meant to show that this sport is both resilient as well as a significant amount of amazing things that are happening,” Phelps mentioned.

“What I do know is that there are a number of teams out there that are interested in selling their charters. Some are in the process of doing that right now. I’d say the interest from private equity has never been higher.
“Are there some comments that have been made on both sides that are unfortunate? Yeah. Are there things that Steve and I said that we would like to not have made public? Yes. I’m sure there are things that 23XI and Front Row also feel that way.
“But what I do know is this is an amazing sport. We are a very resilient sport. We have asked our employees, all of them, to Steve’s point, to put your head down and grow this sport, and that’s what we’ve done.
“I don’t think a lawsuit or anything else is going to ultimately pull against the overall success of this sport as we move forward.”
The 23XI and FRM vs. NASCAR lawsuit is set to go to trial beginning December 1 in Charlotte.
