Setting an uptempo vibe
Derrick Goff, onetime vocal coach on the Metropolitan Opera: “I grew up surrounded by church music, choirs, piano enjoying. I began taking languages. There’s vocal music in different nations, operas, artwork songs. Italian, French, German, Polish, Russian, English.

“There’s specific types. Opera houses are smaller. They say American singers sing too loud. Listen, everything’s bigger in America, so maybe we do, maybe we don’t.”
My husband used to work nightclubs. Anytime he drove a comic or anybody, it was effective. Drive a crappy, awful singer, she’d need air-conditioning off, the window shut, be a large ache to everybody. Singers could be tough.
Derrick: “They are their devices. Non-Americans — not used to air-conditioning — need to exit with mates, go to dinner, have a glass of wine, not fear they’ll not have the ability to do what a singer does. They’re robust. Not actually sick. They simply don’t really feel like coming in. Or are nonetheless on the seaside. They say, ‘I’m a little, uh, underneath the climate, I need to relaxation in order that, you understand, we get the best efficiency.’
