Mayor Zohran Mamdani has opted to kick off his mayoralty with a grandiose housing initiative that . . . exhibits no signal of fixing something.

The plan is for a citywide “Rental Ripoff” tour, exposing buildings and residences in terrible form and their house owners’ “unconscionable business practices.”

Yet what’s the purpose of this sideshow? Everyone is aware of the town has some unhealthy buildings run by neglectful landlords; how does a highlight change the scenario?

Mamdani campaigned on freezing the rent and building 200,000 items of “affordable housing,” not on staging small-ball multi-borough dog-and-pony exhibits to provide the new mayor a probability to preen.

“Naming and shaming” slumlords is a perennial subject; we do it and the public advocate releases a yearly “Worst Landlord Watchlist.”

But precise large-scale enchancment stays a matter of provide and demand — and going through the baneful impression of metropolis and state overregulation.

Fact is, Mamdani “freeze the rent” drive is definite to worsen circumstances in rent-stabilized items, because it’ll power landlords to defer upkeep when building incomes keep flat whereas prices rise for labor, power, insurance coverage and so forth.

His new “tenant advocate,” Cea Weaver, is on the document welcoming that disaster as a result of it could put together the ground for the town to collectivize most housing — one thing the mayor’s bid to demonize landlords would absolutely help.

Yet, for all Mamdani blames predatory landlords for “ripping off” renters, the situation of the metropolis’s own housing stock is as disgusting, if not worse.

Half of the New York City Housing Authority’s 180,000 items have mildew, and nearly all of these are “Large Mold Growths,” per the federal monitor overseeing NYCHA.

If the mayor is severe about making the town more reasonably priced, he’ll should get busy eradicating the restraints on increasing the provision of housing.

“Affordability” mandates, decarbonization necessities, outdated zoning and environmental-review legal guidelines all serve to discourage development.

Maybe Mamdani isn’t covertly pursuing Weaver’s plans for collectivized housing; perhaps he secretly intends to take advantage of his predecessor’s “City of Yes” victories to unleash private-sector housing construction — however doesn’t dare let his Democratic Socialist base understand it.

Either method, his “Rental Ripoff” tour is simply “sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
