A £3.7million bridge can be unveiled subsequent month in Surrey to help snakes, toads and even cows cross the street. National Highways, which maintains Britain’s motorways and main A-roads, stated the heathland bridge has been “designed with reptiles and invertebrates at its heart”, although pedestrians and cyclists can even use the route.

Covered in shrubs and heather from close by commons, the Cockcrow Bridge will help wildlife cross the street safely between two elements of heathland at both facet of the busy A3 close to Cobham, which have been divided because the street was constructed within the Nineteen Seventies. Conservationists hope the project, which is the primary of its type within the UK, will help species flourish, together with grass snakes, adders and common toads.

Steve Elderkin, director of environmental sustainability at National Highways, stated: “While roads have all the time linked people and locations, they’re too usually a barrier for nature, severing habitats and contributing to the decline in biodiversity.

“Our green bridges are designed to blend with the landscape and connect habitats, animals and people, leaving a lasting legacy which ensures nature thrives.”

Experts hope animals living in the two adjoining commons, Ockham and Wisley, will also benefit from the 68-metre feat of engineering, including sand lizards, silver-studded butterflies and heath tiger beetles. The bridge may help them “spread across the local area and encourage them to grow in numbers”.

Pedestrians, cyclists and horse-riders can be welcome to cross the route on a four-metre-wide monitor, whereas a very restricted quantity of automobiles can be granted entry to achieve properties on Wisley Common.

Herds of Belted Galloway cattle can also be seen traversing the bridge so they will attain grazing land on the commons.

A pair of underpasses will even be constructed for toads as half of a £317million project to improve junction 10 on the M25. The three-year project started in 2022 and is meant to cut back congestion and improve street security.
