Cruise ships are a popular choice for millions of people each year with their luxury amenities and diverse destinations.

Among these floating cities, one stands out as the largest and most expensive ever built – the Icon of the Seas.

Operated by Royal Caribbean, this colossal ship cost an eye-watering $1.9 billion to construct, making it not only the world’s largest cruise ship by gross tonnage (248,663), but also the priciest.

The ship embarked on its maiden voyage from PortMiami in the United States on January 27, 2024.

Standing at 20 decks tall, with 18 dedicated to guests, the Icon of the Seas is designed to provide the ultimate cruising experience.

The vessel boasts six multi-fuel engines, capable of operating on both LNG and distillate fuel, aligning with the company’s broader initiative to investigate alternative energy sources.

The cruise liner is brimming with record-setting attractions including seven swimming pools, the largest waterpark at sea, and the highest waterslide ever constructed on a cruise ship.

The Aquadome, situated atop the ship, functions as an entertainment hub showcasing high-diving performances beneath a colossal glass dome.

Another remarkable feature is The Pearl, a dynamic art installation.

Guests can also explore Absolute Zero, an onboard ice rink, or unwind at The Hideaway, a beach club featuring the first-ever suspended infinity pool at sea.

Given its immense size and array of attractions, Icon of the Seas is being hailed as a “floating city,” designed to cater to families, thrill-seekers, and those in search of a luxury vacation experience. Royal Caribbean has marketed the ship as providing “the best of both worlds,” merging the thrill of a theme park with the tranquility of a five-star resort.
