Formula One star Max Verstappen has stated he plans to race the Nurburgring 24 Hours yearly after making an spectacular debut in the endurance racing occasion this weekend.

Verstappen has linked up with Daniel Juncadella, Jules Gounon, and Lucas Auer in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 adorned in Red Bull’s colours. The four-time F1 World Champion even put the No. 3 car in rivalry to win the race following a stellar nighttime shift from the Dutchman, with Verstappen placing them into the lead with slightly below 4 hours to go.

However, after having been changed behind the wheel by Juncadella, Verstappen’s hopes of securing a debut Nurburgring 24 win had been dashed by points with the car.

During Sky Sports’ livestream protection of the race, a message from Stefan Wendl, head of Mercedes-AMG buyer racing, revealed the No. 3 car needed to be repaired as a result of an ABS (anti-lock braking system) error.

Wendl stated, with slightly below three hours remaining in the race, “We received an ABS warning. Daniel said he could handle it, but the noises and vibrations started.

“Two laps he tried to keep it going, he made an unscheduled pit stop and it was injury to the drive shaft which has brought about additional collateral injury, we undoubtedly wish to get back into the race so we’re repairing it.”

While Verstappen will be disappointed by the outcome of his inaugural Nurburgring 24 outing, the F1 driver has admitted he wants to drive events like this every year. “The Nurburgring 24 Hours is one of the largest races of the 12 months, which is why we’re right here,” said Verstappen during a break.

“We’re racing with a skilled line-up, and having me on board is actually thrilling. This is one thing I wish to do yearly – whether or not with one or more automobiles – and our primary aim is to win races.”

He also said back in March, “All the massive endurance races I wish to do, it is one thing that once I was a child, my dad was doing them.

“I don’t need to be only an F1 driver, I can also do other things. I’ve done this already for a while, achieved everything I want to achieve so that’s why I want to explore other things and I don’t want to do them when I’m 40 years old. Now is the perfect age to do it.”
