A new study has found that car owners are at the highest risk of receiving a penalty charge notice (PCN) for breaking parking rules.

All drivers hate the moment when they return to their car only to find a yellow parking ticket on the windscreen, with charges in London potentially rising to a maximum of £160 per offence.

However, according to research by National Scrap Car, it is a particularly common occurrence, especially for drivers who own a model made by Ford.

According to data sourced from local councils, no fewer than 319,887 Fords received a parking fine during 2024 – more than 85,000 more than any other brand of vehicle.

Whilst the figure is particularly high, it is no surprise that Ford topped the list, with the company’s Puma compact crossover being the best-selling new car of the year, and iconic models like the Fiesta and Focus being staples on the used market.

National Scrap Car also noted that a significant number of Volkswagen owners faced expensive fines for parking mistakes over the 12-month period.

234,811 penalty charge notices were put on Volkswagens throughout 2024, with the majority being issued by Manchester City Council.

Much like Ford, Volkswagen also regularly features among the UK’s best-selling car companies, with iconic names like the Polo and Golf sitting alongside a growing range of electric models, such as the ID.3 and ID.Buzz.

Whilst cars from all brands are liable for fines if their driver breaks a parking rule, National Scrap Car shared some of the worst places for penalties to be issued.

According to the company, the Arndale Centre Car Park in Manchester saw the most parking tickets issued in 2024 at 17,356 – an average of 47 per day.

Cleveland Park Avenue in Walthamstow and The Broadway in Ealing also experienced significant numbers of parking fines during the year.
