Coco Gauff’s emotion clear at Indian Wells after – Sports News
It might not have been pretty, but No. 3 seed Coco Gauff survived a three-set clash with Moyuka Uchijima on Saturday 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 to advance to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open, also known as the Indian Wells Open.
Gauff, who snapped a three-match losing streak to earn her first win since the Australian Open, committed 21 double faults and 70 unforced errors in the narrow victory.
Playing on International Women’s Day, Gauff was naturally asked post-match if there is any one woman she wanted to shout out. The 20-year-old picked two: her mom and her grandmother.
“For sure my mom, she’s been rocking with me the past few weeks,” Gauff started. “[Also] my grandmother. She’s a stage 4 lung cancer survivor.”
Gauff continued: “She integrated one of the local schools in Palm Beach County during the civil rights era. She’s the reason why I’m so vocal on certain issues and why I will always use tennis as my platform to fight for equality.”
Gauff stormed to a 4-0 lead in the third set before she was broken twice serving for the match. The American eventually finished off her Japanese opponent via a tiebreak.
Uchijima advanced to the second round after besting Emma Raducanu in the first round. The British star continues to look for form after parting with yet another coach earlier in 2025.
“It wasn’t my best tennis at all today, but I’m just happy to get through,” Gauff admitted post-match. “It’s been a rough couple of weeks, and I’m just happy to get a win on the court. No one likes to lose, and I came in here with determination. It wasn’t my best tennis, but a win is a win.”
After falling in the Australian Open quarterfinals, Gauff lost in her opening matches at both the Qatar Total Energies Open and the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships.

According to Opta: “Gauff (136) is the only player with 100+ combined WTA-1000 and Grand Slam match wins before the age of 21, with Caroline Wozniacki (98) recording the next-most over that span.”
Next up: Gauff will take on No. 29 Maria Sakkari for a rematch of last year’s semifinals.
