Coco Gauff conceded that her serve was a weak point during her hard-fought win over Moyuka Uchijima at Indian Wells.

But she didn’t hesitate to throw shade at her opponent by claiming a straight-sets victory would’ve been hers without those struggles. The American tennis sensation is setting her sights on the California title, having earned a third-round match against Maria Sakkari.

Gauff initially took control by nabbing the first set 6-4, but Uchijima wasn’t going down without a fight, snatching the second set 6-3 and pushing the match to a nail-biting decider. Ultimately, Gauff emerged victorious after an intense tiebreak, wrapping up the marathon match in over two-and-a-half hours.

Post-match, when probed about areas for improvement to enhance her chances at Indian Wells, the 20-year-old acknowledged: “Yeah, I mean obviously serve – just like getting more serves in the court. Off the ground I felt pretty good, honestly.

“I think if I just double-faulted less, it could have probably been a straight-set match. I felt off the ground I felt like I was dictating more of the rallies.

“But, yeah I mean, coming off a tough couple of back-to-back losses, I guess it’s just taking it more as a positive maybe than if I had a couple good weeks last two tournaments.”

Gauff has voiced her relief after a challenging streak, having received consecutive defeats at the hands of Marta Kostyuk and McCartney Kessler in the Middle East tournaments. The downturn for the 2023 U.S. Open champion began with a straight-sets loss to Kostyuk at the Qatar Open, followed swiftly by another straight-sets defeat to Kessler in Dubai.

Prior to these setbacks, Gauff was ousted from the Australian Open quarterfinals by Paula Badosa. Post-match, reflecting on her performance against Uchijima, Gauff shared her sentiments: “It’s been a rough couple of weeks and I’m just happy to get a win on the court.

“No one likes to lose, and I came in here with determination. It wasn’t my best tennis, but a win is a win.”

Looking ahead, Gauff’s next challenge will be Maria Sakkari at Indian Wells, as Sakkari comes off a dominant victory over Viktoriya Tomova.
