The DVLA took to social media to stress that friends and family members may play a crucial role in keeping their loved ones aware of the updates.

The DVLA posted on X: “Know someone who has just turned 70?

“Let them know they can renew their driving licence online: http://gov.uk/renewat70.

“It’s easy, quick and secure on http://GOV.UK.”

Motorists can renew their driving licence online with the DVLA’s online portal for free once they turn 70 or over.

Individuals who turn 70 in the next 90 days will also be eligible to renew their driving licence through the internet.

Photocards can arrive as quickly as one week if motorists apply online, but other options are also available.

Those without access to the internet can apply by post using the D46P application form sent ahead of motorist’s birthdays.

Road users can also renew their photocard using the D1 application form. This can be picked up at most Post Offices.

However, officials warn that paper diving licence applications will usually take longer, with photocards usually arriving in around three weeks,

They stress that new cards may take longer to be issued if any medical or personal details need to be checked.

The Older Drivers Forum has previously issued a crucial reminder to road users above the age of 70s with a simple instruction to never forget the important rule.

They explained: “Driving licences expire at 70 years of age, so when you reach 70, you need to renew your driving licence if you wish to continue driving. You then need to renew it every three years afterwards.”
