My peaceful hand was met with murder in Jewish – Latest News

Late Wednesday, two Israeli embassy staffers — Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky, younger diplomats in their 20s, quickly to be engaged — had been brutally shot to death in Washington, DC, after attending an occasion hosted by the American Jewish Committee for early-career international service officers.

I’m gutted. That occasion is one I helped begin practically 20 years in the past, once I served as AJC’s regional director.

The purpose was easy: to promote understanding and reconciliation amongst rising diplomats from around the globe, even from international locations with historic tensions.

It was a model of bridge-building and peaceful coexistence. Now, it’s a crime scene.

Initial reviews recommend the alleged assailant is affiliated not with a jihadist community, however with a radical socialist group referred to as the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

It has beforehand endorsed violent anti-Israel protests and requires “armed resistance” in opposition to what it calls Western imperialism.

This wasn’t an remoted outburst — it was a worldview made flesh.

What we’re witnessing is the lethal consequence of an ideological framework that categorizes people and nations into a inflexible binary: oppressors and oppressed.

I warned in my 2022 ebook “Woke Antisemitism” of a disturbing trend I’d noticed in progressive activist areas. Increasingly in these circles, I noticed that Jews — particularly Zionist Jews — had been being solid as inherently privileged and oppressive.

It didn’t take long for that slander to go from phrases to threats, as we’ve seen on our faculty campuses and metropolis streets in the final two years.

Now it’s manifesting as murder.

Since the Oct. 7 Hamas assaults on Israel, the alignment between radical leftist actions and Islamist ideologies — what analysts call the “Red-Green Alliance” — has solely deepened.

Together, they’ve created a highly effective, flamable narrative: that Israel is the world’s final oppressor, and something performed in resistance in opposition to its supposed crimes is justified.

This narrative is each mistaken and extremely harmful.

And it’s proving particularly seductive to America’s younger people.

The suspect in Wednesday’s killings was not from the Middle East, not raised in a Muslim nation. He was, by all accounts, a radicalized Western activist.

That’s what ought to chill us most: This ideology is no longer spreading solely by extremist mosques or international media, however by elite American campuses, social media feeds, and yes — even Ok-12 school rooms.

Many of our colleges now educate frameworks that scale back all of historical past and society into energy hierarchies of domination.

Students, even in elementary grades, are instructed to find themselves on an oppression matrix — and Jews, by advantage of their success, are sometimes positioned on the “oppressor” aspect of the ledger, even once they’re focused for violence.

It’s a type of ethical inversion that desensitizes college students to Jewish struggling and normalizes antisemitic hate as a type of valiant resistance.

If we don’t root out this ideology at its source — in our instructional establishments, civic discourse and activist areas — we are going to proceed to see its penalties play out in blood.

Antisemitism doesn’t at all times put on a swastika. Sometimes it wears a keffiyeh.

Sometimes it chants slogans about “liberation.”

Sometimes it reveals up at an interfaith dialogue and pulls out a knife.

The occasion I began at AJC 20 years in the past was based on a perception in diplomacy over dogma, human connection over ideological purity.

What occurred Wednesday evening is a desecration of that spirit.

It should even be a wake-up call for each educator, each policymaker, and each one of us who values a civil society: The cult of ideological extremism in our establishments has grown out of control.

We should summon the braveness now to defund it, expose it and dismantle it — earlier than more blood is spilled in the identify of false righteousness.
