Three cheers for the US-China trade war ceasefire – Latest News
Yay! High-level US-China talks in London this week reached a trade-war ceasefire, offering some stability for nervous markets.
Days of talks, following on President Donald Trump’s call with China’s Xi Jinping final Thursday, settled on a framework that leaves a 55% US tariff on Chinese items and a 10% Chinese levy on American imports.
Plus, Beijing will ease restrictions on rare-earth exports whereas Washington will back off on its developing ban on Chinese college students attending American universities.
Plenty of points stay: China’s key function in world fentanyl manufacturing, for one factor; its long historical past of intellectual-property theft, currency manipulation and so forth.
Not to say the outright espionage that so many of these college students are dragged into.
And of course in the long run the United States must be much less depending on China for uncommon earths, pharmaceutical precursors and plenty of different essential wants.
The two sides are supposed to succeed in a complete deal by Aug. 10, however a minimum of the summer season must be calm.
The chaos of on-again, off-again tariffs had led to turbulence in US markets and had mom-and-pop outlets bracing for “the end”; now they’ll plan a minimum of a couple of months forward, with stable purpose to hope the worst is over.
US companies can adapt to 55% tariffs on Chinese items, as long as they’ve obtained some certainty that the price will stay steady.
Kudos to Treasury and Commerce Secretaries Scott Bessent and Howard Lutnick, the prime US negotiators in London, for mastering “the art of the framework”; let’s hope Trump and Xi can close a last deal.
